Chapter 29 - THE ORDINARY EMERGENCYAt four years old, Elena broke her arm jumping from a garden wall while wearing fairy wings.

Dorian nearly called a helicopter.

I confiscated his phone.

“She needs an emergency room, not air support.”

“She could have internal injuries.”

“She landed on grass.”

“She fell six feet.”

“Three.”

“Emotionally, it was six.”

At the hospital, Elena received a pink cast.

She was delighted.

Dorian looked traumatized.

The doctor told us she would be fine.

In the parking lot, I started laughing.

“What?”

“Think about our lives.”

“I try not to.”

“We survived Victor, kidnappings, federal investigations, prison, Bellamy—”

“And?”

“Our biggest crisis this year is a preschooler convinced fairy wings create lift.”

Dorian looked toward Elena.

She was showing Julian her cast.

Then he smiled.

“I like this crisis.”

“So do I.”

Ordinary problems had once sounded boring.

Now they felt luxurious.
