Chapter 23 - THE TESTDorian’s therapist suggested something he hated.

A week without private security inside the house.
External protection remained.
But no armed man outside Elena’s nursery.
No tracking device in my purse.
No panic button beneath the dining table.
Dorian lasted six hours.
Then secretly put a tracker inside Elena’s stuffed rabbit.
I found it.
Held it up.
He looked ashamed.
“Seriously?”
“It has excellent battery life.”
“Dorian.”
“I’ll remove it.”
He did.
That mattered.
Recovery wasn’t a dramatic transformation.
Sometimes it was removing a tracker from a stuffed rabbit.
Meanwhile, Gabriel accepted a plea agreement for burglary, surveillance and conspiracy.
He would serve time.
Less than he expected.
More than Dorian thought necessary.
Gabriel accepted it.
“I did those things.”
Before he entered custody, he asked to meet me.
“I’m sorry about the photograph.”
I studied him.
“Why Elena?”
“To scare Dorian.”
“It worked.”
“I know.”
“Did you ever intend to hurt her?”
His face changed.
“No.”
I believed him.
I did not forgive him.
Those were different things.
“Then become someone who would never make another mother wonder.”
May you like
He nodded.
“I intend to.”
