Chapter 13 - VICTOR’S LAST INSURANCEVictor Kane refused to speak to us.

He did, however, agree to speak to Evelyn.

We watched from behind prison glass as mother and son faced each other.

Victor looked older.

Smaller.

Prison had removed the illusion that power creates around certain men.

Evelyn placed the photograph on the table.

“Gabriel Voss.”

Victor smiled.

“You finally found him.”

“Is he alive?”

Victor looked toward the observation window.

He knew Dorian was there.

“Yes.”

Dorian’s hand tightened beside me.

Evelyn asked, “Did you tell him Vincent killed his parents?”

“No.”

That surprised everyone.

“Because Vincent didn’t.”

Victor leaned back.

“Thomas Vale did.”

My heart stopped.

My father.

Again.

“No.”

Victor smiled faintly.

“That word must be exhausting for you, Alina.”

I stepped toward the glass.

Dorian caught my hand.

Victor continued.

“Thomas was not merely an auditor. He was Vincent’s internal investigator.”

Reed later confirmed pieces of it.

My father had investigated theft inside Cross Shipping.

Gabriel’s parents were involved.

But Victor’s version had holes.

My father’s old records showed he was in Milwaukee the night of their deaths.

Then Reed found the police report.

The driver responsible for the collision had disappeared.

His name?

Michael Mercer.

I stared at the page.

“Mercer?”

Dorian understood immediately.

Dr. Elaine Mercer.

The doctor who diagnosed my pregnancy.

The woman Victor later kidnapped.

We called her.

She went silent when Dorian said the name.

Then she whispered:

“Michael was my husband.”
