Chapter 14 - THE DOCTOR’S HUSBANDDr. Mercer came to our house voluntarily.

She brought a box.

Inside were twenty-eight years of secrets.

Her husband Michael had worked as Vincent Cross’s driver.

On October ninth, 1998, Vincent ordered him to follow Gabriel Voss’s parents.

Not kill them.

Follow them.

Someone else struck their vehicle.

Michael stopped.

Pulled Gabriel from the wreckage.

Then Vincent arrived.

“Vincent saved him?” I asked.

Mercer nodded.

“He sent Gabriel away because the people responsible believed the boy had died.”

“Who was responsible?”

She handed Dorian an old photograph.

Three men stood outside Cross Shipping.

Vincent.

Victor.

And a third man.

I recognized him.

Everyone in Chicago would.

Arthur Bellamy.

Retired federal judge.

Former United States Attorney.

A man who had publicly praised the prosecution that eventually convicted Victor.

Reed stared at the photograph.

“Oh, hell.”

Bellamy had spent thirty years cultivating a reputation for integrity.

But in 1998, he had been an ambitious federal prosecutor investigating organized crime.

According to Michael Mercer’s notes, Bellamy had secretly taken money from Vincent’s competitors in exchange for investigative information.

Gabriel’s parents discovered it.

They planned to expose him.

The crash silenced them.

Vincent saved Gabriel because saving the child publicly would expose why the family had been targeted.

So he erased him instead.

A monstrous solution to a real danger.

Typical Vincent Cross.

“Why didn’t my father expose Bellamy?” I asked.

Mercer looked at me.

“He tried.”

She handed me another document.

My father’s signature appeared at the bottom.

So did another.

Victor Kane.

They had once been working together.

Before they became enemies.
