Chapter 16 - THE MAN WHO CUT MY BRAKESGabriel Voss walked into an FBI field office forty-eight hours later.

Alive.
He surrendered voluntarily.
He was thirty-four.
Quiet.
Thin.
Nothing like the faceless assassin I had imagined.
He admitted working for Victor.
He admitted photographing me.
He admitted entering the penthouse.
He admitted photographing Elena.
Then Reed asked the question that mattered.
“Did you cut Alina Cross’s brake line?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Gabriel looked directly at me.
“Nobody.”
Silence.
Dorian leaned forward.
“The line was deliberately cut.”
“Yes.”
“Then explain.”
Gabriel did.
The brake line had been damaged after my car reached the garage.
Not before.
The car had never been sabotaged while I was driving it.
Caleb had ordered Eric—Gabriel—to make it look as though someone had tried to kill me.
“Why?”
“Victor wanted Dorian frightened.”
My stomach turned.
“So there was never an attempt on my life?”
“Not that morning.”
Dorian stood.
Gabriel did not move.
“You terrified my pregnant wife.”
“I didn’t know she was pregnant.”
“You entered my daughter’s nursery.”
“Yes.”
Dorian crossed the room.
I caught his arm.
“Dorian.”
He stopped.
Barely.
Gabriel reached into his pocket slowly.
Agents raised weapons.
He removed a flash drive.
“Before Victor sent me away, he gave me an insurance file.”
“Why give it to you?” Reed asked.
“He didn’t.”
Gabriel looked almost amused.
“I stole it.”
On the drive were financial records connecting Bellamy to decades of corruption.
But one folder was encrypted.
Its name:
VINCENT CROSS — SUCCESSION.
When technicians opened it, Dorian stared at the screen.
Then sat down.
His father had never intended the $480 million trust for Dorian’s first child.
That clause had been forged.
By Victor.

The real beneficiary was someone else.
Julian Cross.
