Chapter 1 - The Man Who Survived

The antique watch was running backward.

And when Luca Moretti realized who had repaired it, his fiancée was already reaching for the door.

“STOP THE CLOCK!” Vanessa screamed.

But the watch had already stopped.

And his dead father’s name was engraved inside it.

The engagement dinner at the Moretti mansion was in full swing when Emily Carter entered the ballroom carrying a small wooden box.

Eighty guests sat beneath crystal chandeliers. Champagne glasses glittered across the tables, and a string quartet played softly near the staircase.

Luca Moretti stood beside his fiancée, Vanessa Hart, wearing a black tuxedo.

He was the most feared man in Chicago.

But tonight, he was supposed to be celebrating his engagement.

Emily approached him quietly.

“Mr. Moretti, I need you to see something.”

Vanessa immediately turned.

“Can't you see we're busy?”

Emily lowered her eyes.

“It's about your father's watch.”

Luca's expression changed.

His father, Antonio Moretti, had died six years earlier.

The funeral had been closed to the public. The family had buried him with his favorite gold pocket watch, the one he had carried every day since Luca was a child.

Luca had watched the coffin disappear beneath the ground.

He had never seen that watch again.

“What about it?” he asked.

Emily opened the wooden box.

Inside lay an old gold pocket watch.

Luca stared at it.

The engraved initials were unmistakable.

A.M.

His father's initials.

He picked it up.

Then he noticed the second hand.

It was moving backward.

Luca checked his own watch.

Then the antique one.

The seconds were reversing.

He opened the cover and listened.

A faint mechanical ticking came from inside.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

""That's impossible. Antonio's watch has been broken for years.""

Emily looked at her.

""Someone repaired it yesterday.""

Vanessa's smile vanished.

Luca slowly turned.

""Who?""

Emily hesitated.

""Your fiancée hired the watchmaker.""

The room fell silent.

Vanessa stepped forward.

""That's a lie.""

Emily remained still.

""I saw the receipt.""

Luca looked at Vanessa.

""Why would you repair my father's watch?""

Vanessa forced a smile.

""I thought it would be a beautiful engagement gift.""

""Then why didn't you tell me?""

She glanced at the guests.

""Because I wanted it to be a surprise.""

Luca looked down at the watch.

The ticking grew louder.

Then he noticed something strange.

The watch had a small scratch beneath the crown.

He remembered that scratch.

His father had made it himself when Luca was twelve, after accidentally dropping the watch on the marble floor.

But the scratch was on the wrong side.

Luca turned the watch over.

The back cover had been replaced.

He looked at Emily.

""Who repaired it?""

""A man named Daniel.""

""Where is he?""

Emily swallowed.

""He said he couldn't come.""

Vanessa suddenly grabbed Luca's arm.

""Enough. You're embarrassing me.""

Luca pulled away.

""Not now.""

He pressed his thumb against the back cover.

It clicked.

The metal panel opened.

Inside was a tiny folded piece of paper.

Luca carefully removed it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

His father's.

But the message wasn't addressed to him.

It contained only one sentence.

When the clock stops, find the man who survived.

Luca read it twice.

Then he looked at Emily.

""Did you know this was inside?""

""No, sir.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

""Give it to me.""

Luca looked at her.

""Why?""

""Because it's private.""

He closed the watch.

""Not anymore.""

Vanessa's face turned pale.

Luca turned toward his mother's wheelchair near the fireplace.

""Mother.""

Elena Moretti looked up.

""Yes, darling?""

He held out the watch.

""Do you recognize this?""

The moment Elena saw it, her hands began to tremble.

She didn't touch it.

She stared at the inscription.

Then she looked at the folded paper.

Her lips parted.

""Where did you get this?""

Emily answered quietly.

""Your son found it.""

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

Luca crouched beside her.

""Mother, what does it mean?""

She looked toward the ballroom entrance.

Then she whispered something that made Luca's blood run cold.

""Your father wasn't alone when he died.""

Luca froze.

""What?""

Elena grabbed his hand.

""Someone was supposed to die with him.""

Vanessa stepped backward.

The watch suddenly began ticking again.

Luca looked down.

The second hand had stopped moving backward.

It was moving forward.

Then the watch chimed.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Elena screamed.

""NO!""

The ballroom doors opened.

A man stood in the doorway.

He wore a dark coat and held a photograph.

Luca slowly rose.

""Who are you?""

The stranger looked at the watch.

Then at Elena.

Finally, he spoke.

""Antonio told me you'd ask that question.""

Luca's hand moved toward his gun.

The stranger raised the photograph.

It showed Antonio Moretti standing beside a younger man.

The younger man had the same scar above his left eyebrow as Luca.

But Luca had never seen him before.

The stranger placed the photograph on the table.

Then he looked directly at Vanessa.

""Tell him what happened on October 3.""

Vanessa's face went completely white.

Luca turned toward her.

""What happened?""

She couldn't answer.

The stranger took one step forward.

And Elena whispered the words Luca had spent six years believing were impossible.

""Your father didn't die that night.""

The watch stopped.

May you like

And the man standing in the doorway was wearing Antonio Moretti's wedding ring.
