Chapter 6 - The Mother Who Signed the Death Order

The video ended.
Luca immediately called every contact he had in Indiana.
But the clinic address Sofia had found was already abandoned.
Margaret had disappeared.
Noah was somewhere between two states, and nobody knew who had him.
Gabriel paced the room.
“We need to stop thinking like we're chasing a kidnapping.”
Sofia looked at him.
“Then what are we chasing?”
“A transfer.”
Gabriel explained that the Moretti organization had once used private medical facilities to move injured associates without creating official records.
If Noah had been taken through that system, there would be a paper trail.
Luca ordered a search of every property connected to the family.
Meanwhile, Sofia confronted him with another discovery.
A bank account had been opened under the name of a woman named Maria Bellini.
It had received regular deposits from Antonio's personal funds for eighteen years.
The account holder was still alive.
And the address belonged to Elena's former nurse.
Luca drove there himself.
The elderly woman opened the door and immediately began crying.
“Mr. Moretti. I wondered when you'd come.”
Her name was Rose Bennett.
She had worked for Elena when Luca and Adrian were babies.
She invited him inside and brought out a sealed envelope.
“Your father left this with me.”
Luca opened it.
Antonio's handwriting filled the first page.
If you're reading this, then my family has finally begun asking the right questions.
The letter explained that Adrian's heart condition had been exaggerated.
He had never been expected to die.
Instead, Antonio had discovered that one of the family's doctors was deliberately administering medication that could damage the boy's heart.
The doctor had been paid by Richard.
Antonio moved Adrian away to protect him.
But there was another revelation.
The person who had authorized the original medical treatment was Elena.
Luca stared at the letter.
“Why would my mother sign something like that?”
Rose wiped her eyes.
“Because Richard told her the medication was necessary. He said Adrian would die without it.”
“Did she know?”
“She discovered the truth too late.”
Rose then handed him a second envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Antonio standing beside Edward Hart.
On the back, Antonio had written:
Edward didn't start this. He inherited it.
Luca looked up.
“Who did?”
Rose shook her head.
“Your grandfather.”
The Moretti family had built its empire on a secret agreement with another criminal organization decades earlier. The agreement required the firstborn male heir to marry into a particular family.
Antonio had refused.
He had married Elena instead.
Richard had spent years trying to restore the old arrangement.
Vanessa's family had been selected to fulfill it.
But the agreement was not about marriage.
It was about inheritance.
The Moretti fortune was tied to a private trust that could only be activated by a living blood heir who had been legally recognized before the age of thirty.
Luca was twenty-nine.
Adrian was twenty-nine.
And Noah was the next generation.
Someone wanted all three under their control.
Rose leaned closer.
“There's one more thing.”
She pointed to a date on the letter.
October 3.
“Your mother didn't authorize your father's death,” she whispered. “She authorized the destruction of the original records.”
Luca felt the room go cold.
“What records?”
“The records proving who really owned the family trust.”
He looked down.
A final sentence had been written at the bottom.
The rightful owner is not the son who inherited my name. It is the son who was never allowed to use it.
Luca called Sofia.
“Find out who legally owns the Moretti trust.”
She was silent for several seconds.
Then she answered.
“Luca, I already found it.”
“Who?”
“Adrian Moretti.”
Luca closed his eyes.
“Then Richard has been trying to steal his inheritance.”
“No,” Sofia said.
Her voice dropped.
“Richard has been trying to prevent Adrian from discovering that he owns everything.”
A crash sounded behind Luca.
He turned.
Rose was lying on the floor.
A man stood in the doorway holding a silenced pistol.
Luca reached for his weapon.
The man fired.
Rose screamed.
Luca ducked behind the table and returned fire.
The attacker fell.
Luca rushed to Rose.
She was bleeding, but conscious.
“Who sent him?” he asked.
Rose grabbed his sleeve.
“Your father.”
Luca froze.
“What?”
Rose's eyes filled with tears.
“Antonio ordered me to hide the truth from you. He knew you would come looking. He said if you ever found the letter, it meant he had failed to keep you safe.”
She struggled to breathe.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“Your father is alive, Luca. But he isn't the man you remember.”
