Chapter 7 - The Desperate Strike

Marcus set the tablet on the mahogany coffee table between Daniel and Emily.

On the screen was a breaking news alert from a major national entertainment outlet:

**"HEIR TO STERLING MARITIME ACCUSED OF DOMESTIC ABUSE AND ILLEGAL RESTRAINT: BRIDE VANESSA VANCE BREAKS SILENCE FOLLOWING SHOCKING WEDDING COLLAPSE."**

Daniel’s jaw tightened. "Read it."

Marcus pressed play on an attached audio clip. Richard Vance’s voice, trembling with calculated, theatrical outrage, boomed through the tablet's speakers:

*"My daughter, Vanessa, was subjected to a horrific, orchestrated ambush tonight at the St. Regis Hotel. Daniel Sterling, using his vast wealth and private paramilitary security, fabricated a preposterous narrative involving a disgruntled catering employee to terminate their marriage contract without financial penalty. Miss Vance was physically assaulted, falsely imprisoned, and publicly humiliated by Mr. Sterling’s associates. We are currently filing a fifty-million-dollar civil rights and defamation lawsuit against the Sterling Group and the City of New York."*

The statement continued, claiming that Emily Hayes was an unauthorized trespasser who had attempted to extort the bride in her private dressing room prior to the ceremony, and that Vanessa had acted in self-defense against an aggressive stalker.

Emily’s face went bone-white. "Self-defense? Stalker?! Daniel, they’re going to frame me! They’re going to use their money and lawyers to paint me as a criminal!"

"They can try," Daniel said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, icy calm that signaled total war. "Marcus, where did they release this?"

"AP, Reuters, and every major tabloid," Marcus replied. "Richard Vance still has deep connections with the editors at the *Manhattan Chronicle*. The morning edition is going to print in three hours with Vanessa’s picture on the front page—the picture of her crying on the floor in her wedding dress, framing Daniel as the abusive billionaire who broke her heart and had her arrested."

"Good," Daniel said.

Marcus blinked. "Good? Daniel, if this narrative takes hold in the public consciousness before our legal filings go through on Monday, the Sterling Group’s stock will plummet twenty percent at the opening bell. The board of directors is already blowing up my phone."

Daniel stood up, towering over the table. He straightened his cuffs, the embodiment of cold, calculating power.

"Let them print it," Daniel said. "Call David Kim at the *New York Times*. Tell him I’m granting him an exclusive, on-the-record interview right now. Tell him to bring his senior investigative team to the St. Regis penthouse in twenty minutes."

"What are you giving him?" Marcus asked.

"Everything," Daniel said. "The unedited security footage of the kitchen bribe. Chloe’s Instagram audio. The probate court filings showing Margaret’s fraud. But more importantly..."

Daniel turned his gaze toward the heavy oak desk at the back of the library.

"Julian Alvarez didn't just give us the security footage from today," Daniel said, a lethal smile playing on his lips. "When I took over the Sterling Group three years ago, I installed a private, off-grid surveillance network throughout the hotel’s VIP suites for corporate security. The Vance family has lived in the St. Regis residential tower on our company credit line for the last six months."

Marcus’s eyes widened. "Daniel... you didn't."

"Margaret Vance met with two hedge fund managers from Meridian Capital in the presidential suite last Tuesday," Daniel revealed, his voice devoid of pity. "They were discussing how to short the Sterling Group’s stock immediately after the wedding, using insider information about our new container contracts. They were planning to bleed my company dry from the inside out."

Marcus let out a low whistle. "Securities fraud. Insider trading. Conspiracy to commit corporate espionage. That’s not state prison time, Daniel. That’s federal penitentiary time."

"Exactly," Daniel said. "Vanessa wanted a public war. She wanted to use the media to crush an innocent girl and protect her stolen empire. Well, I’m going to give her a war. And by the time the sun rises over Manhattan, there won't be a single piece of the Vance family left standing."

He turned to Emily, his voice softening infinitely. "Emily, are you ready to show the world who you are?"

Emily looked at the letters from her father resting in her lap. She felt the swelling on her cheek, a physical reminder of the cruelty she had endured in silence for years. But looking at her brother, she felt something new ignite in her chest—not fear, not shame, but the unyielding steel of the Sterling bloodline.

She wiped the remaining tears from her eyes and stood up, her spine straight.

"Tell the reporters to bring their cameras," Emily said clearly. "I’m not hiding anymore."
