Chapter 14 - The Viper in Silk

The storm over the Hudson River unleashed a torrential downpour, matching the fury burning inside Daniel Sterling as his armored motorcade sped north toward the Dutchess County Correctional Facility.

Inside the reinforced Maybach, Emily had already bypassed the firewalls on the recovered hard drive using a portable terminal. Her fingers flew across the keyboard with the speed of an elite coder.

"Vanessa didn't escape alone," Emily reported, her face illuminated by the harsh blue glow of the monitor. "Her transfer order was signed by a corrupt federal judge who retired twenty-four hours later and vanished to a private island in the South Pacific. And her escape was financed through a secret trust fund."

"The Vance family assets were completely frozen by the Department of Justice," Daniel said, his voice deadly calm. "Where did the money come from?"

"From a blind trust registered under the name *Helena Beaumont*," Emily replied, glancing up. "Does that name mean anything to you?"

Daniel went rigid. The color drained from his face, replaced by an expression of pure, visceral revulsion. He looked out the rain-streaked window, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles knotted.

"Daniel?" Emily pressed. "Who is Helena Beaumont?"

"She was my mother," Daniel whispered.

Emily stared at him in disbelief. "Your mother died when you were six years old. Arthur told everyone she died of leukemia."

"That was the lie Dad manufactured to protect the family name," Daniel said, his voice thick with twenty years of suppressed rage. "Helena didn't die of leukemia. She was an heiress of the Beaumont shipping syndicate in France—a family whose fortune was built on blood, smuggling, and political manipulation. When Arthur discovered that Helena was poisoning his board members to take control of Sterling Global, he divorced her and stripped her of every cent. She faked her suicide, changed her identity, and disappeared into the European underworld."

Emily’s mind raced as the pieces of the terrifying puzzle fell into place. "Vanessa Vance wasn't just a spoiled socialite looking to marry you for status. She was Helena Beaumont’s protege. Helena sent Vanessa to destroy you and take the Sterling fortune from the inside!"

"And when you exposed Vanessa at the altar," Daniel said, turning his burning eyes to Emily, "you didn't just ruin Vanessa’s life. You ruined Helena’s thirty-year masterpiece of revenge. That’s why Vanessa was targeting you from the very beginning. Helena knew you were Arthur’s true heir. She knew Arthur had split the empire fifty-fifty in his secret will."

The Maybach screeched to a halt at the gates of an abandoned industrial warehouse on the outskirts of Yonkers. Harrison turned from the front passenger seat, racking the bolt of his assault rifle.

"Sir," Harrison said grimly. "Our satellite tracking on Croft’s secondary cell phone just pinged inside this warehouse. Vanessa Vance is inside. And she’s not alone."
