Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Grand Foyer

The silence that blanketed the St. Regis ballroom after the video ended was different from before. It wasn't the silence of polite shock; it was the suffocating, toxic stillness that surrounds a fallen regime.

Three hundred members of New York's upper crust—people who had kissed Vanessa's cheek two hours ago, who had praised Margaret’s exquisite taste in floral arrangements—simultaneously took two steps back. In high society, cruelty was tolerated, sometimes even admired, provided it was subtle. But public, recorded, felonious savagery paired with financial desperation? That was social leprosy.

"Turn it off!" Margaret Vance screeched, lunging toward the audiovisual tech table near the stage. "Turn that illegal recording off this instant! Richard, do something! Call our attorneys!"

Richard Vance didn't move. He stood frozen, his eyes hollow, staring at his daughter who was crumpled on the floor like a pile of discarded laundry.

"You..." Richard whispered, his voice trembling as he looked at his wife and child. "You idiots. You absolute, arrogant idiots."

"Richard!" Margaret gasped, turning on her husband. "How dare you speak to us like that! We did this for this family! For your firm!"

"You destroyed this family!" Richard roared, the veins in his neck bulging violently. The genteel, blue-blood patriarch vanished, replaced by a terrified, ruined man. "I spent twenty years keeping our insolvency hidden! Twenty years negotiating credit lines! The Sterling merger was the only thing preventing our bankruptcy from hitting the federal register! And you... you orchestrated an assault on Arthur Sterling's daughter on camera?!"

The two NYPD officers stepped forward, their heavy leather utility belts creaking in the silence.

The lead officer, a veteran sergeant named Miller, pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Vanessa Vance. Margaret Vance. Step forward and place your hands behind your backs."

"Don't you dare touch me!" Vanessa shrieked, kicking her legs out, the lace of her four-hundred-thousand-dollar wedding gown tearing against the sharp edge of a fallen champagne bucket. "I am a Vance! You are a city cop! You work for me! Daniel, tell them! Tell them to stop this!"

She reached out toward Daniel, crawling on her hands and knees across the wet marble, heedless of the glass that dug into her palms. Fresh blood welled from her knees, staining the white satin red.

"Daniel, please!" she begged, tears washing streaks of black mascara down her cheeks. "I did it because I loved you! I was afraid she would come between us! She was poor, Daniel, she was an embarrassment to your name! I was protecting you!"

Daniel looked down at her. His face was an unreadable mask of cold stone.

"You weren't protecting me, Vanessa," he said, his voice quiet, almost bored. "You were protecting your greed. And in doing so, you showed me exactly who you are."

He stepped back, letting Officer Miller and his partner move in.

With practiced, unyielding efficiency, the officers hauled Vanessa to her feet. The cold steel snapped around her delicate wrists with a heavy, final *click*. Across the room, Margaret began screaming hysterically as the second officer secured her hands behind her emerald-draped back.

"This is an outrage!" Margaret screamed, her hair falling out of its elaborate French twist. "I know the mayor! I will have your badges by morning! Let go of me!"

"You have the right to remain silent," Officer Miller recited, his voice completely indifferent to her lineage. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

As the two women were paraded down the center aisle of the ballroom, past the very guests who had arrived to celebrate their ascension, phones flashed relentlessly. The socialites weren't hiding their screens now. They were recording openly, live-streaming the spectacle to TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram. Within minutes, the hashtag *#VanceWeddingArrest* was already rocketing to the top of trending topics across North America.

Daniel didn't watch them leave.

Instead, he turned his back on the carnage, walked back toward the private suite, and didn't look back once.
