Chapter 24 - Midnight at Blackwood Asylum

The heavy steel doors of the Clinton Maximum-Security Psychiatric Facility groaned shut behind Daniel Sterling with the finality of a guillotine.

The air inside the subterranean ward was thick with the chemical stench of industrial antiseptic and ozone. Water dripped in slow, torturous intervals from rusted overhead pipes, echoing down the corridor of reinforced concrete and blast-resistant acrylic glass.

Daniel walked with steady, measured strides, flanked by two armed federal marshals who kept their hands on their holstered shotguns. He had utilized every political favor, every offshore blackmail dossier, and fifty million dollars in emergency sovereign bonds to secure this unauthorized, thirty-minute blackout session.

At the very end of the hall, behind three separate biometric checkpoints, sat Cell Zero.

Inside the stark, brightly lit room, there were no chairs, no tables, and no bed—only a stainless-steel bench bolted into the floor. Sitting upon that bench, dressed in a spotless white institutional jumpsuit, was Richard Vance.

He looked older than the photographs Daniel remembered, his silver hair cropped close to his skull, his face lined with deep, predatory scars. But his posture was entirely straight, and his eyes—the piercing, pale green that had haunted Daniel’s nightmares since childhood—were as sharp as surgical scalpels.

As Daniel stepped into the viewing booth, separated only by a two-inch pane of bulletproof polycarbonate, Richard Vance smiled.

"You have Arthur’s jawline, Daniel," Richard spoke into the recessed intercom grille. His voice was soft, melodic, and terrifyingly calm. "Arrogant. Rigid. Brittle. The kind of jaw that shatters when the world doesn't bow to its pedigree."

Daniel picked up the heavy telephone receiver mounted on the wall. He didn't sit down. He stood towering over the glass, his presence radiating an aura of lethal finality.

"I read Evelyn's diary," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a subterranean frequency that made the federal guard beside him shift uncomfortably. "I know what you did to my mother in Biarritz."

Richard tilted his head, his smile never wavering. "Did she write about the terrace? Did she describe how the Mediterranean looked that evening? Your mother was a magnificent creature, Daniel. But she was weak. She thought she was trading her body to save her little boy. What she didn't realize was that she was providing me with the ultimate instrument of Arthur’s destruction."

"She gave birth to a daughter who despises you," Daniel retorted coldly. "Emily knows what you are. She will never claim your name. She will never sign your trusts. And within seventy-two hours, the DNA report and Evelyn's testimony will be handed to the federal prosecutor. You will be stripped of every asset, every shell company, and every corrupt guard in this hellhole."

Richard let out a low, theatrical laugh that echoed through the small room.

"You still think like a CEO, Daniel. You think in terms of assets, courtrooms, and public opinion. How delightfully provincial." Richard rose from the bench, stepping forward until his face was inches from the glass, his pale eyes burning with an unholy fire. "Did you really think I had Dr. Bradley serve Vanessa with the revocation papers to give the money to Emily?"

Daniel’s eyes narrowed. "What did you do?"

"Vanessa is a rabid dog. When you corner a rabid dog, what does it do, Daniel?" Richard’s whisper was poisonous. "It bites. It burns the house down. I deliberately stripped Vanessa of her inheritance because I knew she would go to the only people more desperate than she is: the Bratva syndicate at the Brooklyn navy yard. The men who provided the explosives for Helena's tanker."

Daniel’s heart hammered against his ribs. A trap. A multi-layered, psychopathic trap.

"Vanessa doesn't care about the money anymore," Richard continued, his voice dripping with triumphant venom. "She wants Emily’s head on a silver platter. And while you are sitting here in upstate New York, wasting your precious thirty minutes playing the righteous son... Vanessa’s strike team is already breaching the safehouse where you left my daughter."

Daniel’s blood turned to ice. "The safehouse coordinates were never broadcast. Nobody knew."

"Nobody except your chief of security," Richard smiled, tapping the glass with a pale, manicured fingernail. "Did you really think Marcus was your man, Daniel? Who do you think paid for his daughter’s leukemia treatment in Zurich eight years ago? Arthur? No. Arthur fired him for filing an overtime claim. *I* bought Marcus. And tonight, he delivers Emily to Vanessa."

Daniel dropped the receiver. He didn't wait for the guards. He spun on his heel, his gun drawn before the marshals could react, his voice roaring through the sterile concrete hall:
