Chapter 15 - The Trap in the Shadows

The warehouse smelled of rusted iron, stagnant rain, and gasoline. Rain poured through holes in the corrugated tin roof, splashing onto the cracked concrete floor where shadows danced under flickering halogen work lights.

Daniel and Emily moved through the perimeter breach, flanked by Harrison and six heavily armed Sterling operators. The silence was deafening, broken only by the rhythmic dripping of water and the distant hum of an electrical generator.

In the center of the vast hangar stood an antique dining table covered in pristine white linen. Silver candelabras burned bright against the damp darkness, illuminating an extravagant spread of rotting meat and shattered crystal.

Sitting at the head of the table in a blood-splattered wedding gown—the very gown she had worn on the day Daniel rejected her—was Vanessa Vance.

Her blonde hair was matted and filthy, her once-flawless porcelain skin pale and marked with nervous scratches. But her eyes burned with the unhinged, rabid mania of a predator cornered and consumed by madness.

"You're late for the reception, Daniel darling," Vanessa purred, her voice raspy and cracked. She delicately picked up a crystal champagne flute filled with murky brown water and raised it in a mockery of a toast. "And you brought the maid. How delightfully pedestrian."

Daniel raised his weapon, his voice cutting through the damp chill. "It’s over, Vanessa. The board members you bought are dead or in custody. Drop whatever you're holding under the table and put your hands where Harrison can see them."

Vanessa chuckled, a dry, rattling sound that sent shivers down Emily’s spine. "You think this was about Jonathan Croft? That pathetic old parasite was just the delivery boy."

"Where is Helena Beaumont?" Emily demanded, stepping beside Daniel, unyielding despite the cold wind chilling her blood. "We know she orchestrated your escape. Where is she?"

Vanessa’s gaze snapped to Emily, her eyes widening with manic ecstasy. "She’s right where she needs to be, you little gutter rat. Did you really think Arthur Sterling’s heart simply gave out last year? Did you really believe the strongest titan in New York died quietly in his sleep?"

Daniel froze, his grip on his weapon faltering for a fraction of a second. "What did you say?"

"Your father didn't die of natural causes, Daniel," Vanessa sneered, leaning forward, the candelabras casting grotesque shadows across her bruised face. "Helena spent five years administering micro-doses of thallium through his daily heart medication. I personally watched her slip the final lethal dose into his scotch the night he rewrote his will to include your bastard sister!"

A guttural roar ripped from Daniel’s throat as he surged forward, but Emily caught his arm with superhuman strength, holding him back.

"Daniel, wait! It's a trap!" Emily screamed.

At that moment, the overhead halogen lights went out. The warehouse plunged into pitch darkness, and the high-pitched arming tone of military-grade C4 explosives echoed from the steel support beams above them.
