Chapter 16 - The Symphony of Fire

"Harrison! Out! Now!" Emily screamed, reacting before anyone else could process the mechanical countdown.
From the shadows above the gantry, automatic weapons opened fire in a coordinated ambush. Vanessa Vance’s shrill, lunatic laughter echoed through the cavernous hangar as the countdown on the structural columns blinked red: *00:05... 00:04...*
Daniel grabbed Emily by the waist, tackling her into a submerged inspection pit beneath the warehouse floor just as the first charge detonated.
The explosion tore the concrete apart with apocalyptic fury. The concussive shockwave blew the corrugated roof into the stormy sky, raining twisted girders, flaming debris, and shattered concrete onto the floor above. Harrison and the security team returned fire as they fell back toward the armored vehicles, dragging two wounded comrades through the smoke and fire.
Inside the inspection pit, Daniel shielded Emily with his entire body, the scorching heat of the fireball searing the back of his jacket. The world roared, vibrated, and collapsed into suffocating darkness as tons of rubble buried the entrance of the trench.
Then, silence fell.
Only the crackle of burning timbers and the hissing of punctured water pipes remained.
"Emily... Emily, can you hear me?" Daniel coughed, spitting dust and blood onto the cracked floor of the pit.
Emily groaned, shifting beneath the weight of Daniel’s frame. "I'm alive. Daniel, are you hit?"
"I’m fine," he grunted, though his voice was strained from bruised ribs. He reached for his tactical flashlight, clicking it on. The beam pierced the swirling dust, illuminating a narrow tunnel that once served as a drainage duct for the industrial complex.
Above them, through a narrow crevice in the smoldering wreckage, they heard footsteps crunching on broken glass.
"Search the perimeter," a cold, aristocratic woman’s voice commanded from above. The voice was refined, accentless, and chillingly devoid of humanity. "Make sure the boy and the girl are dead. If they survived the blast, put two bullets in their skulls and bring me Daniel’s signet ring."
Daniel looked up into the darkness, his breath catching in his throat.
"Helena," he breathed, the agony in his voice cutting deeper than any physical wound.
Through the crack in the concrete, Emily caught a glimpse of the woman standing beside Vanessa Vance. She looked barely fifty, possessed of breathtaking, lethal elegance, dressed in an immaculate charcoal cashmere coat, her silver-streaked dark hair styled in an austere chignon. On her right wrist gleamed the identical platinum signet watch that had appeared on the Geneva vault security footage.
"Mother," Vanessa whimpered, clutching her charred arm. "They were in the blast radius. They couldn't have survived."
"Never assume a Sterling is dead until you have their severed head in your hands, you stupid girl," Helena Beaumont snapped coldly. "Now move. The police will be here in eight minutes. We proceed to Phase Two: the seizure of the offshore fleet."

The footsteps receded into the rain, followed by the roar of high-performance helicopter blades ascending into the stormy sky.
