Chapter 26 - Blood in the Winter Garden

The smell of cordite and shattered tempered glass hung thick in the air of the Pound Ridge sanctuary.
Emily lay on the freezing slate floor, her wrists cinched tightly behind her back with industrial zip-ties. She refused to close her eyes. She stared up into the barrel of Vanessa’s silver pistol, her jaw locked in the exact, stubborn defiance that had defined Daniel throughout his entire corporate reign.
"Look at you," Vanessa sneered, circling Emily like a vulture over fresh carrion. She used the steel tip of her designer boot to nudge Emily’s shoulder, forcing her to roll onto her back. "The golden child. The secret princess. Do you know what our father told Dr. Bradley? He said I was a vulgar amateur. He said you... *you* had the true Vance intellect."
Vanessa let out a sharp, hysterical laugh that turned into a snarl. She pointed the gun directly between Emily's eyes.
"He built an entire shadow empire—thirty billion dollars in offshore accounts, weapons shipping lines through the Black Sea, dummy corporations in Panama—and he locked the digital keys behind a biometric trust that only opens with *your* retinal scan and *your* blood! Not mine! *Yours!*"
Emily spat blood from her lip onto the polished concrete. "Then pull the trigger, Vanessa. Shoot me. Kill me right now. Because the second I die, that trust locks permanently, and you walk away with nothing."
Vanessa’s eyes flared with murderous rage. She stepped forward, raising the pistol to strike Emily across the face with the heavy steel frame—
"Drop the weapon, Vanessa."
The voice came from the shattered doorway of the conservatory behind them. It was not loud, but it possessed a terrifying, freezing density that caused every mercenary in the room to instantly pivot their rifles.
Standing in the smoking breach, silhouetted against the dark rain of the forest, was Daniel Sterling.
He was alone. His tailored suit was soaked through with mud and rain, his tie torn away, his emerald eyes burning with an intensity so feral, so utterly homicidal, that even the hardened Russian mercenaries hesitated.
Marcus spun around, raising his assault rifle. "Daniel... don't do this. There are four of them. You can't make the shot."
"You were right about one thing, Marcus," Daniel whispered, taking a slow step into the living room, completely ignoring the four rifle barrels aimed at his chest. "Arthur fired you because he was cold. But Arthur is dead. And I am not Arthur."
Before Marcus could pull the trigger, Daniel’s left hand came out of his coat pocket, throwing an active military-grade flashbang grenade straight into the center of the kitchen island.
"Flash!" Marcus screamed, but it was too late.
The blinding detonation of three million candela and a deafening 170-decibel blast ruptured the room.
The mercenaries staggered backward, blinded and disoriented, firing wild, erratic bursts into the ceiling and walls. Marcus dropped to his knees, clutching his bleeding ears.
Daniel moved with lethal, terrifying speed.
He closed the distance to the nearest mercenary in two strides, his custom tactical blade flashing in the strobing light, severing the man’s carotid artery before his weapon could level. Daniel grabbed the falling body, using it as a ballistic shield against the second mercenary’s fire, simultaneously drawing his suppressed pistol with his right hand and putting two double-taps directly through the second shooter’s visor.
Vanessa shrieked in absolute terror, scrambling backward across the blood-slicked slate, dropping her silver pistol as she fled toward the back glass patio.
The third mercenary swung his shotgun toward Emily on the floor.
"Daniel!" Emily screamed.
Daniel didn't flinch. He threw his tactical knife across the ten-foot gap with terrifying precision. The six-inch steel blade buried itself hilt-deep into the mercenary’s throat. The man collapsed violently, choking on his own blood, his weapon discharging uselessly into the ceiling.
The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the ragged gasps of Marcus, who was crawling toward his dropped sidearm.
Daniel walked over to his former head of security. He stood over him, his pistol lowered, his face carved of absolute granite.
"Daniel... please," Marcus wheezed, blood dripping from his nose. "My daughter... Chloe..."
"I will pay for your daughter's treatment," Daniel said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "She will have the finest doctors in the world. She will live a long, happy life."
Marcus looked up, tears cutting through the grime on his face. "Thank you... Daniel, thank—"
*Crack.*
Daniel pulled the trigger without blinking. The round took Marcus cleanly between the eyes.
Daniel didn't look down at the body. He immediately holstered his weapon, knelt beside Emily, and sliced her zip-ties with a single stroke of a pocket blade. He pulled her up into his arms, checking her face, his hands trembling with an adrenaline he could no longer hide.
"Are you hit? Emily, look at me. Are you hit?"
"I'm fine," Emily gasped, clinging to his soaked coat, her entire body shaking violently. "Daniel... Vanessa ran into the woods. She has the secondary radio."
May you like
"Let her run," Daniel muttered, his jaw set in stone as he pulled her toward the rear exit. "Because where she's running... our father is waiting for her."
