Chapter 19 - The Claws of the Viper

The harbor went black.

With a deafening mechanical thud, Harrison severed the pier’s high-voltage feeds, plunging the *Arthur Sterling I* into absolute, impenetrable darkness.

On the navigation bridge of the supertanker, the sudden blackout triggered emergency alarms that bathed the room in revolving, blood-red warning lights.

"What happened to the auxiliary power?!" Helena Beaumont demanded, her voice slicing through the chaos as her mercenary guards scrambled to activate their night-vision optics.

"The grid was sabotaged from the dock!" the mercenary commander shouted. "We're on emergency battery backup!"

*CRASH!*

The heavy reinforced glass on the bridge’s port side exploded inward as Daniel swung through on a tactical rappel line. In mid-air, his suppressed weapon barked three times, eliminating the two mercenaries flanking the primary console before his boots touched the deck.

He rolled into cover behind the steel navigation helm as the remaining contractors opened fire, riddling the console with high-caliber rounds.

"Daniel!" Helena screamed over the gunfire, not with terror, but with furious, spiteful disgust. "You pathetic, sentimental fool! Just like your father—dying for a name that belongs to me!"

From the shadows behind the master stateroom door, Vanessa Vance stepped forward, holding a military-grade remote detonator wired directly to the LNG manifold. Her eyes were bloodshot, her face contorted in psychotic triumph.

"Put the gun down, Daniel!" Vanessa shrieked, her thumb resting on the red toggle. "One twitch, and I turn this entire bay into the surface of the sun! Put it down or I press it!"

"She won't press it, Vanessa," a quiet, mocking voice murmured from the shadows directly behind her.

Vanessa gasped, spinning around, but before she could bring the detonator up, a slender hand locked around her wrist with the force of an iron vise, twisting the joint violently until bone snapped.

Vanessa screamed in agony, dropping the detonator. Emily caught the device with her left hand before it hit the floor, driving her right elbow ruthlessly into Vanessa’s face. The disgraced socialite collapsed onto the blood-slicked metal floor, clutching her shattered nose as Emily kicked her across the deck.

Helena Beaumont turned, drawing a snub-nosed revolver from her coat, but Daniel stepped out from cover, his Glock trained directly between his mother’s cold, beautiful eyes.

"Drop it, Helena," Daniel whispered, the air between them freezing into absolute zero. "It’s over."

Helena looked at her son, then at Emily, who stood over the groveling, weeping Vanessa Vance with the detonator held securely in her hand. For the first time in thirty years, the mask of the aristocratic monster slipped, revealing the terrified, aging sociopath underneath.

Helena slowly let the revolver slip from her fingers, clattering onto the steel deck.

"You think you’ve won, little boy?" Helena whispered, a twisted, venomous smile creeping across her lips even as Harrison’s team flooded the bridge, disarming the remaining mercenaries. "You think you’re Arthur’s golden prince?"

Daniel motioned for Harrison to secure the handcuffs. "You're going to a federal supermax for the rest of your miserable life, Helena. You will die alone in an eight-by-ten concrete cage."

Helena let out a chilling, melodic laugh that echoed through the bridge.

"Oh, Daniel... you poor, blind idiot," Helena purred, looking past him to Emily with eyes full of terrifying secrets. "You spent all this blood to save your precious sister... and you don't even know who she really is."
