Chapter 18 - Midnight at Port Newark

A blinding fog rolled off the icy waters of the Atlantic, blanketing the labyrinth of shipping containers at Port Newark in a shroud of ghost-white mist.

Dwarfing the docks was the *Arthur Sterling I*, a floating leviathan of red and black steel stretching over a thousand feet in length. Heavy security perimeters had been established around Pier 42, but the men guarding the gantries were not union dockworkers—they were European private military contractors carrying assault rifles with infrared sights.

Beneath the shadow of the crane tracks, Daniel and Emily moved through the darkness like twin phantoms. Harrison’s tactical team moved in a pincer maneuver, neutralizing the outer perimeter guards with silent, non-lethal takedowns before slicing through the fiber-optic communication lines leading to the main bridge.

"The tanker’s main release valves are controlled from the engine room beneath the waterline," Emily whispered, studying the ship’s engineering blueprints on her wrist terminal. "If Helena’s men open the primary manifold, the gas will vent across the bay within three minutes. A single flare will ignite the entire harbor."

"I'll take the engine room," Daniel commanded. "You and Harrison secure the bridge and override the navigation lockout."

"No," Emily countered, grabbing his wrist, her voice firm and absolute. "Helena is on the bridge. She’s waiting for you, Daniel. She expects you to charge the command deck out of blind filial rage. It’s an ambush. Vanessa is likely holding the manual detonator on the bridge while Helena coordinates the offshore wire transfer."

Daniel locked eyes with his sister. In that moment, he saw Arthur Sterling’s iron will and their mother’s unbreakable street courage blazing in her soul.

"What's the play, Em?" he asked.

"We flip the board," Emily said coldly. "Harrison cuts the tanker’s primary power grid. When the ship goes dark, their thermal optics will blind them for four seconds. You breach the bridge from the port-side catwalk. I take the ventilation shaft into the master suite behind them."

"And Vanessa?" Daniel asked.

May you like

Emily’s lips curled into a predatory smile that would have terrified the high-society elites who once watched her mop their floors. "Vanessa is mine."
