Chapter 20 - The Lie in the Blood

The storm broke as dawn cracked over the horizon, painting the Manhattan skyline in bruised shades of purple and gold.

Port Newark was crawling with federal agents, Homeland Security tactical units, and maritime fireboats. Vanessa Vance, sobbing uncontrollably and wrapped in a prison blanket, was pushed into the back of an armored FBI van, her dreams of high-society glory ending in handcuffs and shame.

Helena Beaumont was led down the gangway in heavy chains, surrounded by six armed federal marshals. As she passed Daniel and Emily, she paused, her cold gaze lingering on Emily with a mixture of malice and chilling pity.

"Enjoy your kingdom while you can, Emily," Helena whispered, before the agents forced her into the waiting convoy. "Ask Daniel to open Vault 88 in the Manhattan Federal Reserve. Ask him what Arthur buried there twenty-three years ago."

Emily stood on the pier, the wind whipping her hair across her face, a cold dread settling in the pit of her stomach. The thrill of victory vanished, replaced by a suffocating premonition.

Daniel walked up beside her, his face pale despite the morning light. In his hand, he held a sealed titanium cylinder recovered from Helena’s personal safe on the bridge.

"What is that, Daniel?" Emily asked, her voice trembling slightly.

"Helena’s personal leverage file," Daniel said, his fingers hesitating over the biometric latch. "The document she was going to use to blackmail the board if the tanker heist failed."

Daniel pressed his thumb to the sensor. The cylinder hissed open with a release of nitrogen gas, revealing an original, faded document stamped with the seal of the New York State Department of Health and a certified DNA sequencing report dated twenty-three years prior.

Emily watched Daniel’s eyes scan the text. She watched the color drain from his face until he looked like a walking ghost. The paper began to shake in his hand.

"Daniel... tell me," Emily pleaded, reaching for his arm. "What does it say? Who was my father?"

Daniel looked down at her, his emerald eyes—the exact same shade as hers—swimming with profound, devastating shock.

He didn't speak. He simply turned the paper toward her.

At the top of the certified report, the maternal name was clearly printed: *Evelyn Sterling*.

But beneath the section marked *Biological Paternity*, Arthur Sterling’s name was crossed out with a red legal stamp.

In its place, confirmed by a ninety-nine-point-nine percent genetic match, was the name of the man who had founded the Vance criminal empire—Arthur Sterling’s most hated enemy:

*Richard Vance.*

Emily staggered backward, the world spinning beneath her feet.

She wasn't Arthur Sterling’s daughter.

She was Vanessa Vance’s half-sister.

Before Emily could scream, before Daniel could utter a single word, the phone in Daniel’s pocket began to ring with an unlisted, priority-zero satellite frequency.

Daniel answered with numb fingers, putting it on speaker.

A raspy, triumphant voice came through the line from inside the high-security psychiatric ward of the state penitentiary:

*"Hello, Daniel. Did my daughter finally read her birth certificate?"*
