Chapter 23 - The Poisoned Crown

The blast of high-caliber sniper rounds rained glass shards down like razor-sharp hail upon the conservatory floor.

"Sniper! Get down!" Marcus bellowed, throwing his body across Daniel and Emily as a heavy 7.62mm bullet punched through the antique cherrywood desk, detonating the wood into flying splinters.

Daniel reacted on pure, lethal instinct. He grabbed Emily by the collar of her coat, dragging her across the marble floor beneath the overhang of the structural stone archway just as a secondary volley of suppressed gunfire chewed through the Persian rugs where they had stood seconds before.

"Marcus, report!" Daniel barked, drawing his tactical sidearm and clearing the debris from his vision.

"Rooftop across the alleyway! East side!" Marcus shouted into his radio, returning fire through the shattered conservatory dome with three controlled bursts from his submachine gun. "Two shooters in full tactical gear! They aren't trying to capture her, Daniel—they're executing an assassination order!"

Emily lay against the cold wainscoting, clutching the leather-bound diary against her chest like a shield. The terror that had paralyzed her moments ago was suddenly replaced by a strange, arctic stillness.

"It's Vanessa," Emily whispered through the deafening noise of gunfire. "She doesn't want a sister. She doesn't want to share the Vance empire. The press conference was just a cover to flush me out."

"She’s not touching you," Daniel snarled, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of diamond. He peered around the limestone pillar, calculating the trajectory of the muzzle flashes reflecting off the brick building eighty yards across the courtyard.

Daniel tapped his throat mic, switching to the tactical channel of his outer perimeter team. "Bravo team, collapse on the eastern rooftop. Neutralize the spotters. I want the sniper alive."

"Bravo lead copies. Moving in."

Within thirty seconds, the distant rattle of suppressed automatic fire echoed across the Gramercy rooftops, followed by the sickening thud of a heavy body plummeting down the fire escape into the alley below. The sniper fire abruptly ceased.

"All clear! Roof secured!" the radio crackled.

Daniel stood up, his suit jacket covered in white plaster dust and glass fragments. He extended his hand to Emily. She looked at his outstretched palm, seeing not just her brother, but the man whose life her birth had been traded for. She took his hand and let him pull her to her feet.

"We leave now," Daniel commanded. "The NYPD will be here in three minutes, and every dirty precinct chief on the Vance payroll will be looking for an excuse to take you into 'protective custody.'"

Meanwhile, across the city, inside a private penthouse suite overlooking Central Park, Vanessa Vance was pacing the length of a sixty-foot Italian marble salon, a crystal tumbler of scotch shaking in her manicured hand.

Her phone buzzed violently on the glass table. She snatched it up, pressing it to her ear. "Is it done? Is the little bastard dead?"

"The team failed, Ms. Vance," a cold, computerized voice replied from the other end. "Sterling’s security detail was reinforced. Both shooters are dead or captured. The girl is still breathing."

Vanessa let out a guttural shriek of fury, hurling her crystal glass across the room. It shattered violently against a multi-million-dollar modern painting, splashing amber liquor across the canvas like arterial blood.

"Incompetent fools!" she screamed. "She has the diary! If she takes that diary to the grand jury, the rape allegation destroys my father's legal status, and the Vance trust automatically reverts to the state! I lose everything! Do you hear me? Everything!"

The double doors of the penthouse study clicked open.

Standing in the doorway was not one of her private security guards, but a tall, skeletal man dressed in the crisp, dark uniform of a senior state psychiatric administrator. In his hand, he carried a sealed diplomatic briefcase stamped with the official insignia of the Department of Corrections.

"You should lower your voice, Vanessa," the man said softly, stepping into the room with an eerie, clinical poise. "Your father does not appreciate hysterics."

Vanessa froze, the color draining from her sculpted face. "Dr. Bradley... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be supervising his isolation block at Clinton."

Dr. Bradley placed the briefcase on the grand piano, clicking the dual combination locks open. "Your father’s isolation block has been an operational command center for the last five years, my dear. He anticipated your failure at the wedding. He anticipated Helena's failure at Port Newark. And he anticipated that your vanity would drive you to try to murder his true prodigy."

Vanessa stepped backward, her chest heaving with rising panic. "True prodigy? What are you talking about? Emily is a Sterling whore! She’s an accident! A mistake!"

"Your father does not make mistakes," Dr. Bradley replied calmly, pulling a heavy legal folder from the case. "Richard never intended to leave the Vance empire to you, Vanessa. You possess his cruelty, but none of his intellect. You are loud, predictable, and careless. Emily, however... Emily survived twenty-three years inside Arthur Sterling’s home without being broken. She has the Sterling legitimacy and the Vance bloodline. She is the poisoned crown Richard designed to swallow both families whole."

Dr. Bradley produced a single sheet of paper signed in fresh, bold black ink—dated that very morning, stamped with the official seal of the state surrogate court.

"Your power of attorney has been revoked, Vanessa," Dr. Bradley smiled, his eyes devoid of warmth. "Richard has named Emily sole executor of the Vance global estate. And he has instructed me to inform you that if you attempt to touch a single hair on her head again... he will have you erased before dinner."
