Chapter 24 - PREGNANT GRACE IS DANGEROUSAt eleven weeks, Grace cried because a restaurant stopped serving her favorite pie.

At twelve weeks, she cried because James found the pie somewhere else.
At thirteen weeks, she became furious because he bought six.
“Why six?”
“You wanted pie.”
“I wanted one.”
“I was ensuring supply.”
“I'm pregnant, not preparing for nuclear winter.”
James nodded.
“Understood.”
Five minutes later Grace ate two slices.
James wisely said nothing.
At fourteen weeks, she woke him at 1:36 a.m.
“I need pickles.”
James opened his eyes.
“Now?”
“No, James. Next Thursday.”
He got up.
Grace caught his wrist.
“Where are you going?”
“Pickles.”
Her eyes filled.
“You'd really go?”
He stared.
“You just asked me.”
Grace started crying.
James panicked.
“Why are you crying?”
“Because you're nice.”
He sat beside her.
“Grace.”
“And annoying.”
“Okay.”
“And I love you.”
“I love you too.”
“And I hate pickles.”
James stared.
“Then why—”
“I DON'T KNOW.”
May you like
James hugged her.
Pregnancy, he decided, was the only negotiation he would never understand.
