“I thought we weren't friends.”
“We aren't.”
“Then why are you doing this?”
Daniel smiled.
“Grace asked me to make sure you don't do anything stupid.”
James stared.
“She sent my fiancée's ex-husband to supervise me?”
“Pretty much.”
James rubbed his face.
The evening consisted of steak, poker, and Daniel telling embarrassing stories about Grace.
“She once tried to assemble a bookshelf backward.”
James smiled.
“She told me that.”
“She blamed the instructions.”
“She still does.”
Daniel looked at him.
“You really love her.”
James's smile faded.
“Yes.”
Daniel nodded.
“Good.”
James studied him.
“You okay with this?”
Daniel considered.
“I wasn't okay with myself for a long time.”
He looked down.
“Grace deserves someone who makes her life lighter.”
James said quietly,
“So does Chloe.”
Daniel looked up.
“She already has a father.”
“I know.”
The answer mattered.
Daniel extended his beer.
James tapped his glass against it.
Not friends.
