Chapter 4 - The Husband Who Came Too LateLorenzo spent the next forty-eight hours dismantling his uncle's network.

Quietly.
Carlo Falcone could not know he had been exposed.
Lorenzo discovered that three captains, two accountants, and one man inside the family's security division had been secretly loyal to Carlo.
The Brooklyn attack had never been Moretti retaliation.
It had been an internal coup.
And Vivian had accidentally become the center of it.
Matteo traced Rosa's sedan.
The trail eventually led to a rural clinic.
Rosa had been treated there.
Under a false name.
Someone had paid cash.
Security footage showed Elena Bellini.
Lorenzo recognized her.
“Vivian's aunt.”
Matteo nodded.
“She owns a property near Cold Spring.”
Twenty minutes later, Lorenzo was driving.
Matteo tried to stop him.
“Take men.”
“No.”
“If Carlo knows—”
“If Vivian sees armed Falcone soldiers arriving, she'll think I came to drag her back.”
“Didn't you?”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“No.”
That answer surprised both men.
He reached the cottage near sunset.
Vivian was standing on the porch.
She saw him before he exited the car.
Her entire body went still.
Lorenzo stepped out.
For once, he wore no tailored suit.
Black pants.
Dark sweater.
No visible weapon.
No entourage.
Vivian's expression hardened.
“How did you find me?”
“Rosa.”
Fear flashed through her.
“She didn't tell you anything.”
“She didn't have to.”
Lorenzo remained several yards away.
“I won't come closer unless you want me to.”
Vivian almost laughed.
“You're learning boundaries now?”
He accepted the blow.
“Yes.”
Rain began falling softly.
“Vivian, I know about the baby.”
Her face changed.
Lorenzo's voice broke on the final word.
“I found the test.”
Vivian wrapped her arms around herself.
“That changes nothing.”
“It changes everything.”
“For you.”
“For me,” he agreed. “Not for you.”
She looked surprised.
Lorenzo swallowed.
“I came to tell you you're in danger.”
“I've been in danger since I married you.”
He had no defense.
“My uncle Carlo killed your father.”
Vivian went still.
Lorenzo explained everything.
When he finished, Vivian disappeared inside and returned carrying the brass key.
“My aunt told me.”
Lorenzo stared at it.
“Carlo wants that.”
“Then he can have it.”
“No. He'll kill you afterward.”
Vivian looked directly at Lorenzo.
“Are you protecting me because I'm carrying your heir?”
“No.”
She gave him a bitter smile.
“Then why?”
The answer was simple.
But Lorenzo had spent his entire life making simple things impossible.
“Because I love you.”
Vivian's face became empty.
He stepped forward before stopping himself.
“I loved you when you brought coffee into my office even after I told you I didn't want it. I loved you when you laughed at my father's terrible jokes. I loved you every night I came home and saw the hallway light you'd left on.”
His eyes reddened.
“And I was terrified.”
Vivian shook her head.
“You don't get to turn cruelty into romance because you were afraid.”
“I know.”
“You don't get to break someone and call the pieces proof you loved them.”
“I know.”
“Stop saying that!”
Her voice cracked.
Lorenzo remained still.
Vivian's tears finally came.
“I waited three years for you to choose me.”
“I know.”
“You humiliated me.”
“I know.”
“I was going to tell you about our baby.”
His jaw trembled.
“And you looked at me like I disgusted you.”
Lorenzo lowered his eyes.
There was no apology large enough.
So he did something Vivian had never seen him do.
He stepped backward.
“I won't ask you to forgive me.”
She stared at him.
“I won't ask you to come home. I won't ask you to stay married to me.”
He placed a phone on the porch railing.
“Matteo's number is inside. If you're ever in danger, call.”
He turned away.
“Lorenzo.”
He stopped.
Vivian looked at him through the rain.
“What happens now?”
“I find Carlo.”
“And then?”
Lorenzo looked back.
“I make sure our child never inherits the world I inherited.”
He returned to his car.
Vivian watched him leave.
Elena appeared behind her.
“He loves you.”
Vivian wiped her cheeks.
“That doesn't mean he's good for me.”
“No.”
Elena looked toward the disappearing car.
“But perhaps he finally understands that.”
The following morning, Vivian and Elena traveled to Manhattan.
They entered the private bank.
The brass key opened Box 417.
Inside was a black ledger.
Three cassette tapes.
Photographs.
And a sealed envelope addressed to Vivian.
She opened it.
Her father's handwriting covered two pages.
Halfway down, Vivian stopped.
Her face went white.
Elena leaned closer.
“What?”
Vivian read the sentence again.
Anthony Bellini had identified Carlo's accomplice.
Someone who had helped arrange his murder.
Someone Lorenzo trusted completely.
May you like
Vivian whispered the name.
“Matteo.”
