Chapter 18 - The Contract Beneath the ContractGiancarlo Vale had served the Falcones for thirty-five years.

Elegant.
Patient.
Invisible in the way only powerful lawyers could be.
They found the proof inside the original marriage agreement.
Not the copy Lorenzo had seen.
The original.
Clause seventeen contained language removed from Lorenzo’s copy.
In the event of Anthony Bellini’s death, all Bellini custodial assets would transfer to a protected beneficiary upon Vivian Bellini’s lawful marriage to Lorenzo Falcone.
The assets included voting shares in three Falcone legitimate companies.
Enough shares to block a takeover.
Vivian had unknowingly controlled the exact businesses Carlo needed to seize before overthrowing Salvatore.
The marriage had not merely protected Vivian.
It had protected Lorenzo’s inheritance from Carlo.
Lorenzo stared at his wife.
“So marrying me put you directly in his way.”
“Yes.”
Then came the worst part.
A handwritten amendment.
If Vivian died without children, the shares reverted to a trust administered by Giancarlo Vale.
Lorenzo’s blood turned cold.
Vale had financial motive to ensure Vivian died before producing an heir.
The threats during her pregnancy suddenly looked different.
Adrian had wanted revenge.
But someone had provided schedules.
Medical appointments.
Security routes.
Private information.
Vale had access to all of it.
Matteo checked old records.
Then his face changed.
“There’s more.”
The night Lorenzo told Vivian he never loved her, he had returned from the Brooklyn docks bleeding after a meeting that nearly became an ambush.
Vale had arranged that meeting.
Vivian understood first.
“He was supposed to make Lorenzo unstable.”
Exhausted.
Paranoid.
Cruel.
Push Vivian out of the estate.
Remove her from protection.
Then take her.
Lorenzo stared at the floor.
Vale had not forced him to say those words.
That guilt remained his.
But someone had engineered the night around his worst weaknesses.
Then Matteo received a call.
Giancarlo Vale’s office was empty.
His phones were disconnected.
And Bellini House had just received a courier envelope.

Inside was one sentence.
