Chapter 17 - The Man Lorenzo Never KilledHis name was Peter Caruso.

An accountant.

Lorenzo had been told Caruso stole two million dollars and sold information to the Morettis.

Salvatore ordered Lorenzo to make an example of him.

But Caruso vanished hours before Lorenzo’s men reached his house.

For years, Lorenzo assumed someone warned him.

Vivian had.

She had overheard Salvatore and Carlo discussing Caruso at dinner.

She knew enough from Anthony’s old codes to recognize that Caruso was not a thief.

He was another source.

So Vivian sold her grandmother’s necklace for cash.

Rosa delivered the money.

Elena arranged new identities.

Caruso escaped with his wife and twelve-year-old son.

Lorenzo stared at Vivian.

“You interfered with a hit.”

“Yes.”

“If I’d discovered it—”

“You might have killed me.”

The answer was quiet.

It destroyed him.

“I don’t know if I would have,” he whispered.

“Neither did I.”

That was worse.

Peter Caruso was still alive.

They met him in a diner outside Hartford.

When Lorenzo entered, Caruso stood.

Fear crossed his face even after all these years.

Lorenzo stopped several feet away.

“I’m not here to hurt you.”

Caruso laughed bitterly.

“That sentence used to mean the opposite when your family said it.”

Caruso then revealed why he had been targeted.

He had found payments to a federal task-force supervisor who protected Carlo.

But the account authorizing those payments did not belong to Carlo.

It belonged to a Falcone family trust controlled by Salvatore.

Lorenzo’s face went cold.

“My father?”

Caruso shook his head.

“The signature was his. But I don’t think the authorization was.”

“Why?”

“Because I watched Salvatore confront the man who forged it.”

“Who?”

Caruso looked at Vivian.

“Your father’s lawyer.”

Lorenzo knew immediately.
