Chapter 24 - The Debt of the FathersPike did not want money.

He wanted the tape.

Salvatore was leverage.

Lorenzo’s first reaction surprised Vivian.

He did not say they should trade it.

He said, “What does my father want?”

They reached Salvatore through a hidden phone Pike had missed.

The old man’s voice was weak.

“Do not give him the tape.”

Lorenzo closed his eyes.

“Dad.”

It was the first time Vivian had heard him use that word in years.

Salvatore continued.

“I spent my life making other people pay for my fear.”

“You don’t have to die for it.”

“No.”

A pause.

“But you don’t have to become me to save me.”

Pike moved Salvatore to an abandoned courthouse annex scheduled for demolition.

Federal agents prepared a rescue.

Lorenzo stayed outside the command perimeter.

Old Lorenzo would have entered with a gun.

This time, he waited.

It was agony.

Vivian held his hand.

Inside, Salvatore created his own opening.

He told Pike that Anthony’s original evidence was hidden in the courthouse basement.

Pike took him downstairs.

There was no evidence.

Only an old emergency alarm.

Salvatore pulled it.

Agents breached.

Pike fired.

Salvatore was hit in the shoulder.

Pike was arrested.

Alive.

The real tape, combined with Vale’s streamed confession and Samuel’s testimony, dismantled the conspiracy.

Vivian’s charges were dropped.

Peter Caruso received immunity for testimony.

Marco Rossi submitted a sworn statement before dying peacefully two weeks later.

Giancarlo Vale was indicted.

Judge Pike faced federal prosecution.

For the first time, the truth existed somewhere no family could bury it.

Weeks later, Salvatore sat in Bellini House recovering.

Children ran through the foyer where armed men once stood.

He watched Lucia chase Anthony beneath the chandelier.

“I was wrong about this place,” he said.

Lorenzo sat beside him.

“You were wrong about a lot.”

Salvatore smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

Then he handed Lorenzo a final envelope.

Isabella’s handwriting.

Lorenzo stared.

His mother had written it days before her death.

My Lorenzo,

If they ever teach you that love makes you weak, they are teaching you to become easier to control.

His eyes filled.

Vivian sat beside him.

At the bottom Isabella had written one final sentence.

Choose the person who lets you remain human.

May you like

Lorenzo looked at Vivian.

After all these years, his mother had described her perfectly.
