Chapter 20 - The Brother Who Stayed BuriedSamuel Vale lived under the name Samuel Vance in a small farmhouse near Poughkeepsie.

He opened the door and stared at Vivian.

“You married him.”

Lorenzo almost smiled.

“Twice.”

Samuel looked unimpressed.

Inside, the house contained decades of evidence.

Giancarlo had not simply served Carlo.

He had manipulated Carlo.

For years, Vale moved money between rival families, federal informants, judges, and shell companies.

War made him rich.

Peace threatened him.

Anthony Bellini discovered the scheme.

Isabella Falcone discovered part of it.

Daniel Mercer discovered another part.

All three became targets.

Lorenzo’s mother.

Vivian’s father.

Mara’s father.

One man had stood behind three destroyed families.

Samuel’s hands trembled.

“I helped him once.”

He had delivered a forged medical report that made Isabella appear addicted to prescription drugs.

Salvatore believed it.

When Isabella died, everyone accepted the overdose narrative.

Lorenzo’s face lost all emotion.

Samuel whispered, “I’m sorry.”

Lorenzo walked outside.

Vivian followed.

“My entire childhood was a lie.”

Vivian touched his back.

“My father made me hate her.”

“He may have believed the lie too.”

“That doesn’t give me those years back.”

“No.”

Lorenzo turned toward her.

“Is this what it felt like when you learned your mother lived?”

Vivian nodded.

For once, their grief mirrored each other.

Inside, Samuel revealed Vale’s final leverage.

Twenty-five years earlier, Salvatore had discovered Giancarlo’s fraud.

Vale threatened to expose crimes that would imprison Salvatore and leave teenage Lorenzo defenseless.

Salvatore made a bargain.

He stayed silent.

In exchange, Vale stopped targeting Lorenzo.

At least temporarily.

Lorenzo stared.

“My father knew?”

Samuel nodded.

“Not everything. Enough.”

Then Samuel handed Vivian a sealed photograph.

It showed Sofia Bellini standing outside the Falcone estate.

Date: the morning after Vivian disappeared.

Sofia had been there.

Watching Lorenzo search for her daughter.

On the back she had written:

HE LOVES HER. HE JUST LEARNED IT TOO LATE.
