Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN HE LEFT BEHIND

Dante arrived in Boston alone.
He found Evelyn behind the counter of her bookstore.
She looked different.
Simpler.
Happier.
She looked up.
Her smile disappeared.
“What are you doing here?”
Dante stared at her.
“I know.”
Evelyn's heart sank.
“How much?”
“Everything.”
She looked away.
“Then go back to your wife.”
“You're my wife.”
“No.”
His jaw tightened.
“You were the woman I loved.”
“You loved Vivian.”
“I was wrong.”
Evelyn laughed.
“You were wrong for two years.”
“I was wrong for seventeen.”
She froze.
Dante stepped closer.
“The girl who saved me was you.”
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because by the time you found me, you were already in love with someone else.”
“I wasn't.”
“You held her photograph while touching me.”
Dante closed his eyes.
“I thought she was you.”
“That doesn't make it better.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“It makes it worse.”
Before Evelyn could respond, gunfire exploded outside.
The bookstore windows shattered.
Dante immediately pulled Evelyn to the floor.
Men in black rushed through the door.
Dante drew his weapon.
The fight lasted seconds.
Then silence.
Evelyn stared at him.
“Who were they?”
Dante looked at the bodies.
“Someone wants you dead.”
“Why?”
His phone rang.
It was Julian.
Dante answered.
A weak voice spoke.
“Dante Moretti?”
“Yes.”
“I know who tried to kill me.”
Dante's expression changed.
“Who?”
May you like
Julian whispered:
“Your families.”
