Chapter 9 - The Restoration

One month later, the gavel struck the sounding block in Federal District Court.

Judge Harrison looked down from the bench with zero leniency.

“Adrian Vale, on the counts of corporate conspiracy, grand larceny, wire fraud, and aggravated assault, you are hereby sentenced to twenty-two years at United States Penitentiary, Pollock, without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen years.”

Adrian didn't even look up. He sat in his orange jumpsuit, his head bowed, his hands chained to his waist. Across the aisle, Lila Chen received twelve years for her role in the foreign wire fraud scheme, while Vivian Vale was ordered to surrender all family assets and sentenced to five years of probation and community service in an elder-care facility.

Every dollar stolen from the Sterling Family Trust was ordered returned in full, bolstered by the liquidated assets of Vale Development.

Two days after the sentencing, the boardroom of Whitmore Capital was filled with sunshine streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows. I sat at the head of the oak conference table, signing the final paperwork that officially merged the Sterling estates with the harbor redevelopment initiative under my sole executive authority.

The board members stood and applauded as Marcus Vance handed me the master seal.

I walked out to the private balcony overlooking the city skyline. Below, the bustling streets and high-rises moved in their eternal rhythm, but for the first time in my life, I wasn't an invisible bystander. I was in control of my own destiny.

Eleanor sat on the terrace in her customary cream coat, listening to the hum of the city below.

“You did well, Claire,” she said softly, turning her sightless eyes toward me. “Your father would be exceptionally proud of the woman who reclaimed his name.”

“I couldn't have done it without you, Eleanor,” I replied, sitting across from her. “You saved my life that night in the rain.”

May you like

Eleanor smiled a cryptic, knowing smile. “Did I? Or did you simply need someone to hand you a match so you could burn down the cage they built around you?”
