Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Viper

Adrian was ejected from the gala, but the public humiliation was only the opening move.

The following morning, inside Eleanor’s penthouse overlooking the harbor, Marcus Vance dropped a thick leather dossier onto the marble coffee table in front of me.

“We ran a comprehensive background check on Lila Chen,” Marcus said, pulling up a series of encrypted transaction logs on an iPad. “Claire, she didn’t just stumble into Adrian’s office as a desperate assistant looking for a promotion. Her maiden name is Lila Vance-Vogel. Her father was Conrad Vogel.”

My breath hitched. Conrad Vogel had been my father’s bitterest business rival—the man who lost the historic harbor project bid to Arthur Sterling fifteen years ago and went to prison for bribery.

“She’s not just Adrian’s mistress,” Eleanor noted from the chaise lounge, her hands resting calmly on her cane. “She’s the architect of his demise. Tell her, Marcus.”

“Lila systematically fed Adrian bad financial advice,” Marcus explained. “She nudged him into forging your signature on the trust documents, knowing that once the fraud was discovered, the Sterling trust would default directly into a blind offshore holding company registered in the Cayman Islands. A company she owns.”

I stared at the paperwork, piecing together the terrifying puzzle. Adrian thought he was the mastermind abusing an obedient wife, but he was nothing more than an arrogant puppet being manipulated by his own mistress.

“Where is she now?” I asked.

“At the First National Bank downtown,” Marcus said, checking his watch. “Adrian gave her power of attorney this morning to liquidate his remaining offshore reserves before the court freeze fully locks down the international servers. He thinks she’s transferring the funds to a private account they can flee the country with.”

“And instead?” I asked.

Eleanor smiled coldly. “Instead, she’s packing a private jet for Zurich, leaving your husband to take the full criminal fall for ninety million dollars in corporate theft.”

I stood up, smoothing my jacket. “Thomas, get the car. Let’s make sure my husband finds out who really orchestrated his life.”
