Chapter 4 - The Gala Ambush

For forty-eight hours, Adrian went into hiding, scurrying between second-rate motels and the sleazy offices of predatory lenders. But the annual Vanguard Gala—the city’s premier gathering of venture capitalists and civic elites—was an event he couldn't afford to miss. It was his last desperate chance to secure an emergency bridge loan before his empire collapsed entirely.
The grand ballroom of the St. Regis was a swirl of champagne flutes, velvet tuxedos, and diamond chokers. Adrian arrived flanked by Lila, who wore a borrowed scarlet gown that looked cheap under the crystal chandeliers. Vivian trailed behind, trying desperately to maintain her aristocratic smirk despite the whispers rippling through high society.
“Just smile,” Adrian hissed to Lila through clenched teeth. “Councilman Ross is here. If I get his signature on the downtown zoning exemption, the banks will have to reopen our credit lines.”
“Is that him?” Lila asked, pointing toward the raised dais where a crowd of city officials had formed a tight circle.
Adrian shoved his way through the crowd, putting on his practiced, predatory smile. “Councilman Ross! Wonderful to see you. I’d like to introduce my chief financial liaison—”
The circle parted. Councilman Ross wasn't talking to an investor. He was bowing slightly out of profound deference to an elderly woman in an emerald gown, sitting in a velvet armchair with dark glasses: Eleanor Whitmore.
And standing right beside her, holding a folder of financial audits and wearing a floor-length sapphire dress that had once belonged to my mother, was me.
“Claire?” Vivian gasped, clutching Adrian’s arm so hard her knuckles turned white.
“Councilman,” I said smoothly, ignoring my estranged husband completely. “As the newly appointed majority shareholder of the harbor redevelopment project, Whitmore Capital is withdrawing all proposed bids involving Vale Development. The forensic audit revealed eight counts of wire fraud and forged zoning permits.”
The ballroom went dead silent.
“You vindictive bitch!” Adrian lunged forward, his mask slipping entirely in front of two hundred of the city’s most powerful figures. “You stole those files! She's mentally unstable, Councilman! She’s my wife, and she’s trying to extort me!”
Two Whitmore security guards blocked Adrian instantly, pinning his arms behind his back with practiced efficiency.
Eleanor slowly turned her dark glasses in the direction of his voice.

“A dog always barks loudest when the chain snaps,” Eleanor said, her quiet tone carrying across the vaulted room. “Adrian Vale, you are financially dead. You simply haven't laid down yet.”
