Chapter 3 - The Cold Reckoning

Three hours later, the rain had settled into a fine mist over the gated community of Oakridge Estates. The sprawling modern mansion that my father’s money had paid for glowed with warm lights.

Inside the dining room, Adrian was pouring single-malt scotch, laughing loudly with Vivian and Lila.

“She’ll be walking until sunrise,” Vivian crowed, adjusting her diamond necklace. “By tomorrow, she’ll be on her knees begging to sign the asset release form.”

“I’ll make sure she signs over the remaining voting rights on the harbor project too,” Lila purred, swirling her drink. “Adrian, baby, you handled her perfectly.”

The heavy mahogany front door didn’t open with a key. It slammed open with a heavy thud as two private security officers in tactical suits flanked the entryway.

Adrian jumped, spilling his scotch across the glass table. “What the hell is this? Who authorized—”

His words died in his throat as I stepped into the foyer.

I wasn't soaking wet. I was wearing an immaculate cream silk blouse, tailored trousers, and Eleanor Whitmore’s personal legal counsel—Marcus Vance, the most feared corporate litigator on the Eastern Seaboard—stood directly at my side. Behind us walked Thomas, silent and imposing.

“Claire?” Adrian blinked, his face flushing red with rage. “How dare you bring strangers into my home? Did you call the police? I told you—”

“This isn't your home, Adrian,” I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

Vivian sneered, standing up from the table. “You insolent little girl! You walk in here after embarrassing my son? Lila, call security and have this trash escorted to the curb!”

“Lila can't make that call,” Marcus Vance intervened, unbuttoning his jacket to retrieve an embossed court order. “Oakridge Estates was purchased entirely through the Sterling Family Trust. As of forty-five minutes ago, an emergency injunction signed by the Chief Justice has frozen all accounts associated with Vale Development, including this property.”

Adrian’s jaw dropped. He looked at Lila, then back at me. “That’s impossible! The trust is under my corporate management!”

“It was,” I said, stepping closer until I could smell the stale alcohol on his breath. “Until Eleanor Whitmore bought your ninety-million-dollar defaulted construction debt from Meridian Bank ten minutes ago.”

Adrian turned ashen. “Whitmore? You’re lying. She doesn’t take meetings. She hasn’t backed a play in ten years!”

May you like

“She just backed mine,” I said softly. “You have thirty minutes to pack one suitcase each. If you touch anything belonging to the Sterling estate, you will be arrested for felony grand larceny before your shoes hit the driveway.”
