Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

Adrian lunged forward, throwing the fuel canister directly at me. I dodged to the left, crashing into a row of wooden pallets as fuel splashed across the concrete floor.
He swung the crowbar in a wide arc. It caught my shoulder with a sickening thud, sending a jolt of white-hot agony down my arm. I collapsed onto the cold floor, gasping for breath as he stood over me, his face twisted in venomous triumph.
“You were nothing before I married you!” Adrian screamed, raising the crowbar with both hands. “A quiet little orphan with a fat bank account! You should have stayed at that bus stop!”
“She wasn't alone at that bus stop,” a cold voice echoed through the vast warehouse.
Adrian froze, glancing toward the entrance.
Thomas stepped through the doorway, his silhouette backlit by the glare of high-powered tactical flashlights. Behind him were four armed officers with tactical carbines leveled at Adrian’s chest.
“Drop the weapon,” Thomas commanded, his voice dead and steady. “Step away from Mrs. Vale. Now.”
Adrian looked from the officers to the lighter in his pocket. A manic gleam flared in his eyes. “If I'm going down, she goes with me!”
He reached into his pocket to flick the lighter, but Thomas didn't hesitate. A non-lethal stun projectile struck Adrian dead center in the chest.
Adrian convulsed, his muscles seizing instantly as the electric current dropped him to his knees. The crowbar clattered harmlessly against the stone floor. He collapsed face-first into the shallow puddle of gasoline, groaning pathetically as two tactical officers swarmed him, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Thomas knelt beside me, gently wrapping a warm wool jacket around my uninjured shoulder.
“Are you all right, Claire?” he asked quietly.
I looked at Adrian, sobbing on the floor as he was dragged toward the squad car, stripped of his arrogance, his wealth, and his freedom.

“I’m fine, Thomas,” I said, my voice steady for the first time in three years. “Take me home.”
