Chapter 7 - The Cornered Rat

With Vivian being taken into custody for outstanding warrants involving past financial fraud and Lila held at the federal detention center, Adrian’s world collapsed completely. The district attorney’s office filed fourteen counts of corporate embezzlement, identity theft, and domestic assault against him.

Bail was set at five million dollars. He had zero.

Desperation makes a violent man unpredictable.

Three nights before the preliminary trial, the security alarms at the Sterling Family Archive—the old brick warehouse downtown where my father had stored thirty years of blue-chip development blueprints and historical company ledgers—triggered silently.

I was working late at Whitmore Capital, reviewing the restructured restitution documents that would return ninety percent of the stolen assets back to my control.

“Claire, stay in the office,” Marcus said over the speakerphone. “The silent alarm went off at the warehouse. Thomas and a security detail are already en route.”

“The original master deeds to the harbor are in the wall safe there,” I said, adrenaline spiking in my veins. “If Adrian destroys those original paper copies, the city can invoke an eminent domain clause and seize the docks before the trust can reclaim them.”

I didn't wait for Marcus’s permission. Grabbing my coat, I took the private elevator down to the garage and drove toward the warehouse.

The rain was falling again, just like the night Adrian had abandoned me.

When I entered the darkened warehouse, the scent of gasoline hit my nostrils immediately.

“I knew you’d come,” a rasping voice echoed from the shadows of the mezzanine.

Adrian stepped out from behind a row of metal shelves. His clothes were torn, his hair matted with sweat, and in his right hand, he held a heavy steel crowbar. In his left was a red plastic fuel canister.

“You took everything from me, Claire,” Adrian snarled, walking slowly toward me, the crowbar dragging along the concrete floor with a screeching sound. “My company. My reputation. My mother is having a nervous breakdown in a county cell. And you're walking around playing the grand heiress.”

“You did this to yourself, Adrian,” I said, refusing to back away. “Put down the canister. There are cameras everywhere. You’re only adding arson to your indictment.”

He laughed—a cracked, unhinged sound. “There won't be an indictment if you burn with the evidence.”
