Chapter 19 - The New Reign

Six months later, the Moretti estate hosted the wedding of the century.

The gardens were covered in thousands of white hydrangeas, blush roses, and delicate lilies. White silk ribbons fluttered in the gentle spring breeze, and classical string quartets played softly from the stone terrace. The guest list included governors, international philanthropists, business leaders, and the devoted staff of the estate, all gathered to celebrate a love story that had risen from the ashes of betrayal and neglect.

Lily served as the flower girl, dressed in a miniature white lace dress, giggling as she tossed rose petals down the white carpet.

When Nora stepped out onto the aisle, accompanied by Don Giovanni who proudly walked her down without a cane, the entire congregation stood in awe. Nora wore a breathtaking off-the-shoulder bridal gown of French lace, her veil trailing behind her like a sea of mist. Her smile was radiant, luminous with a happiness so profound it touched every soul in attendance.

At the altar stood Lorenzo.

He watched her walk toward him, his eyes glistening with unshed tears of gratitude. The man who had once been known as the cold, merciless executioner of New York stood humbled before the woman who had transformed his world.

When Giovanni reached the altar, he took Nora’s hand and placed it gently into his son's palm.

"Take care of her, Lorenzo," Giovanni whispered raspy but firm. "She is the greatest treasure this family will ever possess."

"With my life, Dad," Lorenzo vowed.

The vows were spoken not with grand theatrical promises, but with the quiet, unbreakable solemnity of two people who had survived the darkest winters and found warmth in each other’s arms. When the priest announced them husband and wife, Lorenzo pulled Nora into his arms, kissing her with a passion and reverence that brought the crowd to a standing ovation.

At the reception that evening, the grand dining hall—the very room where Mrs. Gable had once held court with cruelty—was alive with joy and celebration.

Maria, the elderly Sicilian midwife, danced happily with Marcus the groundskeeper. Vito and the security team, dressed in elegant tuxedos, raised their champagne glasses in genuine salute to their new matriarch.

Late into the night, Lorenzo led Nora out onto the second-story balcony.

The valley below was quiet, the Hudson River winding like a silver ribbon beneath a canopy of brilliant stars. The breeze was warm, fragrant with the scent of blooming pine and lilac.

Lorenzo wrapped his arms around Nora from behind, resting his chin gently on her shoulder as she leaned back against his strong chest.

"Are you happy, Mrs. Moretti?" he murmured into her hair.

Nora looked down at the gold wedding band gleaming beside the diamond ring on her finger. She thought about the cold cellar, the bucket of mop water, the hunger, and the fear that had once defined her existence. All of it had washed away, leaving behind a foundation of unshakeable love.

"More than happy, Lorenzo," Nora smiled softly, turning in his arms to wrap her hands around his neck. "I finally feel like I can breathe."

Lorenzo leaned down and kissed her softly on the lips. "From this night on, Nora, you will never have to face the dark alone. You have an army at your back... and my heart in your hands."
