Chapter 13 - The Legal Ambush

Within thirty minutes, the grand reception hall of the estate was turned into a hostile legal battlefield. Outside, snow flurries began to dust the marble steps, echoing the night Lorenzo had arrived two years before.
Brody walked into the room like he owned the ground he walked on. He sneered as he took in the imported chandeliers, the priceless oil paintings, and the gilded cornices. Behind him walked his lead attorney, Arthur Pendelton, a notorious corrupt fixer known for handling dirty litigation for New York cartels. Two armed local deputies waited nervously by the entryway.
"Well, well, Nora," Brody said, his voice dripping with condescending arrogance. "Look at how well you're living. Here I thought you were starving in a shelter, but you moved right into a mobster’s palace."
Nora stood near the fireplace, clutching Lily tightly against her chest. The little girl clung to her mother's dress, sensing the hostility and hiding her face in Nora’s neck.
"You gave up any right to speak to me the night you stole my rent money and left me to freeze on the streets, Brody," Nora said, her voice shaking with controlled fury. "You didn't care if I lived or died."
"That was a misunderstanding, baby," Brody chuckled, spreading his hands wide. "I was in trouble. But things change. I found out you gave birth to my daughter. A father has rights, Nora. And no court in this country will leave a toddler in an armed fortress run by convicted racketeers."
Pendelton stepped forward, dropping a thick leather binder onto the antique coffee table with an authoritative thud.
"Miss Vance, this is an emergency court injunction issued by Supreme Court Judge Vance Sterling," the lawyer declared pompously. "It orders the immediate transfer of physical custody of Lily Vance to her biological father, Mr. Brody Miller, pending full genetic confirmation. The Moretti estate is deemed an active combat environment unfit for a minor child."
"Judge Sterling?" Nora whispered.
"Sterling is on Falcone’s payroll," a commanding voice cut across the room.
Lorenzo entered through the double oak doors. He had not taken a car; he had flown through the blizzard via private helicopter, landing directly on the estate's rear lawn. He hadn't even taken off his leather combat gloves. His black overcoat fluttered behind him, his gray eyes radiating sheer predatory murder.
Behind him walked six of the family’s top internal security operatives, their jackets bulging with concealed automatic firepower. The two sheriff deputies instinctively stepped backward, resting their hands on their duty belts, sweat forming on their foreheads despite the winter chill.
Brody swallowed hard, losing a fraction of his smug confidence as Lorenzo towered over him. "Moretti. You can't touch me. The police are right here. If a single hair on my head is harmed, your whole empire comes down under RICO."
Lorenzo didn't even look at Brody. He looked at the lawyer.
"Sterling took fifty thousand dollars in unmarked bearer bonds deposited in an offshore account in Nassau yesterday morning," Lorenzo said smoothly, tossing a thin red file onto the table over Pendelton’s court order. "His wife received a diamond necklace purchased from a boutique on Fifth Avenue paid for by a shell company registered to Dante Falcone."
Pendelton’s pompous expression dissolved into instant panic. "I... I have no knowledge of—"
"Shut up," Lorenzo snapped, turning his gaze onto Brody. "You think you're clever, Brody? You think selling your soul to Falcone to kidnap a two-year-old girl makes you a man?"
Brody took a brave step forward, puffing out his chest. "She’s my blood, Lorenzo! You have no legal claim over her! Hand her over right now, or the deputies will cuff the girl and take her by force!"

Giovanni slowly pushed his chair forward, stopping directly in front of Brody.
"Touch that child," the old Don rasped, his voice dropping into a register so dark it sent chills down the spines of the deputies, "and I will personally ensure your body is never found."
