Chapter 12 - Shadows Over the Estate

The crisp autumn air of upstate New York gradually gave way to the early bite of a second winter. At the Moretti estate, life had found a tranquil rhythm. In the sunlit library, Giovanni sat opposite Nora, teaching her the fundamentals of commercial contracts and property acquisitions. The old Don had become more than a protector; he was her mentor, treating her like the daughter he had never had.
"A signature without leverage is just ink on paper, Nora," Giovanni explained raspy but clearly, tapping the mahogany desk with his silver-topped cane. "Never enter a room where you are not prepared to walk away from the table. Fear is good, but respect lasts longer."
On the Persian rug beside them, two-year-old Lily was busy stacking colorful wooden blocks, happily babbling as the golden retriever napped beside her.
"She has your eyes, John," Nora said fondly, handing him a freshly brewed mug of lemon herbal tea. "And Lorenzo’s stubborn streak."
Giovanni chuckled, a deep, raspy sound that brought warmth to the expansive library. "God help whatever boy tries to break her heart twenty years from now. Lorenzo will probably deploy two helicopter gunships to follow her to prom."
Their laughter was cut short by the sudden vibration of the estate intercom. Vito’s voice crackled through the speaker, tight and urgent.
"Don Giovanni. Miss Nora. We have a situation at the outer perimeter gate."
Giovanni’s smile vanished instantly, his features settling back into the hardened, lethal mold of the East Coast Mafia Don. He reached under the edge of the mahogany desk and pressed a silent red button that automatically engaged the reinforced steel shutters over the library’s floor-to-ceiling windows.
"What is it, Vito?" Lorenzo’s voice chimed in from the Manhattan penthouse via the encrypted line.
"A private security convoy just approached the North Gate, Boss," Vito reported. "They’re flashing federal paperwork and legal court orders. They have local sheriff deputies with them."
Nora’s heart dropped. "Court orders? For what?"
"Paternity," Vito replied grimly. "And immediate emergency custody."
Nora froze, the cup of tea rattling in her hand. Paternity.
Before she could speak, the library’s heavy monitors clicked on, showing live surveillance footage from the grand gate. Standing outside the wrought-iron barrier, flanked by two lawyers in expensive overcoats and four sheriff deputies, was a man Nora recognized all too well.
Brody.
He was dressed in an expensive camel-hair coat, his hair slicked back with salon gel, flashing a cocky, rehearsed smile at the security cameras. He didn't look like a terrified degenerate gambler sentenced to foreign labor. He looked like an entitled heir backed by serious, dangerous money.
Beside him stood a man wearing dark sunglasses, leaning against an armored Mercedes sedan. It was Dante Falcone.
"They brought Brody back," Nora whispered, panic surging through her blood like ice water. "How... how is he here?"
May you like
Lorenzo’s voice on the intercom was so cold it sounded like cracking glaciers. "Dante Falcone paid off Brody’s debts. They’re using the legal system as a front to extract Lily from the estate. If they take the child, they have leverage over our entire family."
"They will take her over my cold corpse," Giovanni said, standing up without his cane, his eyes burning with ancient fire.
