Chapter 15 - The Siege Begins

The humiliation at the North Gate was an insult Dante Falcone could not swallow.
Two nights after Brody was dumped bleeding on the steps of the local precinct, the winter blizzard struck the Catskill mountains in full fury. High winds knocked out electrical transformers across the county, plunging the dense, snowy forests into deep pitch-blackness.
Inside the estate, the secondary industrial generators roared to life immediately. But this was not an ordinary power failure.
In the basement security bunker, Vito stared at thirty monitor screens displaying external camera feeds. Suddenly, four screens in the eastern sector flickered to static. Then six more in the perimeter forest went black.
"Boss," Vito spoke into his tactical headset. "They cut the fiber optic trunk line near the highway. We’ve lost external sensor relays on the east ridge. It's Falcone. He isn't playing legal games anymore."
Lorenzo stood in the command center, wearing black tactical gear, checking the slide on a customized sidearm. "How many?"
"Thermal drone showed at least twenty armed mercenaries moving through the tree line on snowmobiles," Vito replied grimly. "They’re using heavy military assault gear. Falcone hired ex-paramilitary contractors. They’re coming to burn this fortress to the ground."
Upstairs in the private master wing, Nora held Lily tightly in her arms. The toddler was fast asleep, unaware of the armed men surrounding their sanctuary. The heavy steel blast doors of the east corridor slid shut with a mechanical clang, sealing Nora, Lily, and Giovanni inside the panic vault.
Giovanni sat in his leather chair, a vintage Colt .45 resting on the small table beside him. The Don’s silver hair gleamed in the dim emergency lighting.
"Don't be afraid, Nora," Giovanni said quietly, his voice remarkably steady. "This house was built to withstand artillery shells. Lorenzo knows how to handle wolves."
"I'm not afraid for myself, John," Nora whispered, looking at the security monitor mounted on the vault wall. "I'm afraid for him."
On the monitor, Lorenzo was visible stepping into the grand foyer.
Suddenly, the massive front oak doors of the mansion exploded inward in a hail of splinters and blinding fire. A flashbang grenade detonated, illuminating the foyer in brilliant white light, followed immediately by the thunderous roar of automatic rifle fire.
Glass chandeliers shattered above, raining thousand crystal fragments onto the polished marble floors.
Mercenaries in white winter camouflage poured through the breach, their weapons spitting muzzle flashes into the darkness.
"Clear the foyer! Move upstairs!" a mercenary captain shouted through a tactical mask.
From behind the grand marble staircase, Lorenzo stepped out. He did not duck; he did not cower. With cold, mechanical precision, Lorenzo fired three shots, taking down the lead two intruders before they could raise their scopes. Behind him, Moretti loyalists opened fire from the mezzanine, turning the grand entry into an impenetrable kill zone.
The sound of gunfire was deafening, tearing into imported wood paneling, shredding tapestries that had hung for a century.
Through the shattered front entrance stepped Dante Falcone, flanked by two heavily armored bodyguards carrying tactical riot shields. Dante held a gold-plated assault rifle, his scarred face twisted into a maniacal grin.

"Lorenzo!" Dante’s voice echoed over the gunfire. "Give me the Don and the girl, and I'll let you bleed out in peace!"
Lorenzo reloaded with a fluid, practiced motion, his eyes cold as ice. "Come and take them, Dante."
