Chapter 16 - The Shield of the Don

The battle inside the estate raged with savage intensity. Moretti’s security team was outnumbered, but they knew every secret passageway, every reinforced alcove, and every ballistic blind spot in the sprawling mansion. Vito directed tactical crossfires from hidden vantage points, systematically picking off Falcone’s mercenaries as they pushed up the grand staircase.
Yet Dante was ruthless. Using heavy smoke grenades and breaching explosives, his men blew through the secondary security doors leading toward the family’s private quarters.
"Upstairs! Check room 4B! That’s where the old man sleeps!" Dante yelled, leading his surviving six men down the smoke-filled corridor of the east wing.
Inside the panic vault, the heavy steel door shuddered under a massive thud.
Thump. Thump. Bang!
They were using a hydraulic battering ram on the vault hinges.
Nora gasped, pressing Lily into a padded alcove beneath the reinforced steel desk. "Shh, baby, stay quiet. Mommy’s right here."
"Nora," Giovanni said, standing up on his own two feet. He gripped his heavy Colt pistol with both hands, his knuckles turning white. His stance was wide, solid, rooted into the floor like an ancient oak tree. "Stand behind me."
"John, you can't fight them—"
"I was running this city while Dante Falcone was still in diapers," Giovanni said, his voice dropping into a lethal, calm whisper. "No man enters this room and touches my family."
With a deafening screech of tearing metal, the locking bolts gave way. The heavy steel door swung inward, revealing Dante Falcone through the swirling white smoke, his weapon leveled.
"Hello, Don Giovanni," Dante sneered, stepping into the room. "Look at you. Still playing the lion."
Before Dante could raise his barrel, Giovanni fired twice.
The heavy .45 caliber rounds struck Dante’s armored vest with sledgehammer force, knocking the younger mob boss backward against the doorframe, gasping for breath as the ceramic trauma plates cracked under the impact.
Dante’s eyes widened with shock. "You crazy old bastard—"
Dante raised his weapon to retaliate, but a shadow moved behind him in the smoke.
Lorenzo appeared like a phantom.
Grabbing Dante’s rifle barrel, Lorenzo twisted it sideways, dislocating Dante’s wrist with a sickening crack. In the same motion, Lorenzo drove his elbow into Dante’s face, shattering his nose and sending him crashing to the floor, bleeding heavily onto the hardwood.
Outside in the hallway, the gunfire abruptly stopped.
Vito and three surviving Moretti guards stepped into view, their weapons pointed at the two remaining mercenaries, who immediately dropped their rifles and threw their hands into the air.
"Perimeter secure, Boss," Vito wheezed, wiping blood from a cut above his brow. "Local state police swat teams are five minutes out. We intercepted their radio traffic—Falcone’s political protectors just folded. It's over."
Lorenzo stepped over the shattered door, his black tactical gear stained with powder burns and soot. He looked down at Dante, who was writhing on the ground, groaning in agony.
Lorenzo pressed the warm muzzle of his sidearm against Dante’s forehead.
"Lorenzo," a soft voice spoke from the corner.
Lorenzo glanced up.
Nora stood by the desk, holding Lily in her arms. The child was crying softly, trembling. Nora looked at Lorenzo—not with fear of what he was, but with gentle, pleading mercy.
"Don't do it in front of her," Nora whispered softly. "We aren't them."
Lorenzo stared at Nora for a long, silent moment. The murderous rage in his gray eyes slowly receded, replaced by a profound, grounding stillness.
He lowered the hammer of his weapon and pulled it away from Dante’s head.
"Vito," Lorenzo said coldly. "Turn Dante over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation along with the offshore financial ledgers. Let him spend the next sixty years rotting in a supermax federal cell in Colorado."
Lorenzo holstered his gun and walked over to Nora. With gentle hands, he wiped away a smudge of soot from her cheek, then reached out to touch Lily’s curly hair.
"Are you hurt?" Lorenzo asked, his voice shaking with raw, tender vulnerability.
May you like
Nora shook her head, tears of relief slipping down her face. "We're safe. Because of you. Because of both of you."
Giovanni lowered his pistol, stepping forward to wrap his arm around Nora’s shoulders, his weathered face breaking into a triumphant, tired smile.
