Chapter 5 - WHY NORA WAS CHOSEN

The photograph destroyed Nora’s last illusion that she had entered the Moretti estate by accident.

Someone had watched her.

Long before Giovanni.

Long before Lorenzo.

Marcus traced the photograph to a private investigator.

The investigator had disappeared.

But his financial records remained.

He had been paid by Elias Moretti.

Lorenzo confronted his uncle by encrypted video.

Elias appeared from his Manhattan office looking more irritated than afraid.

“You sound paranoid.”

“You photographed Nora Hale before she entered my house.”

“Who?”

Lorenzo held the photograph toward the camera.

Elias’s expression barely changed.

That was enough.

“You know her.”

“I investigate hundreds of people.”

“Why her?”

Elias smiled.

“Ask your father.”

The call ended.

That answer led Giovanni to reveal the first great secret.

Using an alphabet board, he slowly spelled a name.

MARGARET HALE.

Nora stared.

“My mother?”

Giovanni blinked.

Her mother had died when Nora was fourteen.

A nurse.

Kind.

Quiet.

Poor.

Or so Nora believed.

Giovanni spelled another word.

ACCOUNTANT.

Nora shook her head.

“No. My mother was a nurse.”

Giovanni insisted.

Eventually Lorenzo found the truth.

Margaret Hale had once worked as a forensic accountant for a Moretti-controlled construction company.

Twenty-four years earlier, she discovered millions disappearing through fake charities.

Elias had been involved even then.

Giovanni had secretly helped Margaret escape.

She changed professions.

Changed cities.

Raised Nora far away from the Morettis.

But before disappearing, Margaret had hidden copies of the financial evidence.

Elias believed Nora might know where.

“I don’t,” Nora whispered.

Lorenzo believed her.

Elias did not.

Brody had been recruited through gambling debt to get close to her.

Their entire relationship had begun as surveillance.

Nora vomited when she understood.

Brody hadn’t simply abandoned her.

He may never have loved her at all.

That night, she sat alone in the greenhouse.

Lorenzo found her crying silently.

He didn’t tell her to stop.

He sat beside her.

“I keep replaying everything,” she said.

“The first date. The first time he told me he loved me. The night I told him I was pregnant.”

Lorenzo said nothing.

“What if every good memory was fake?”

“Not every memory belonged to him.”

She looked over.

“What?”

“The happiness you felt was yours. The love you gave was yours. His dishonesty doesn’t make your feelings counterfeit.”

Nora stared at him.

Nobody had said anything like that to her.

Lorenzo looked toward the snow outside.

“My mother died when I was seventeen.”

“I’m sorry.”

“My father became harder afterward. So did I.”

“You?”

A faint smile.

“I was worse.”

“I find that difficult to imagine.”

He laughed.

Actually laughed.

Nora smiled through her tears.

Then his expression softened.

“You don’t have to become cruel because somebody used your kindness against you.”

That sentence stayed with her.

The next morning, Nora remembered something.

Her mother’s recipe box.

After Margaret died, Nora kept it through every apartment, every eviction, every move.

Inside was a handwritten recipe for lemon cake that never made sense.

The measurements were absurd.

17 cups flour.

4 cups sugar.

9 eggs.

Numbers.

Coordinates.

Lorenzo’s team decoded them.

They led to a safe-deposit box in Albany.

Inside they found a flash drive.

Bank records.

Names.

Politicians.

Judges.

Businesses.

Enough information to destroy Elias.

But there was something else.

A letter addressed to Nora.

My darling girl, if you are reading this, then the Moretti family has found you again. Giovanni Moretti saved my life. Trust the man, not the name.

Nora cried.

Then Lorenzo found another envelope.

Addressed to Giovanni.

Inside was evidence that Margaret had uncovered one final secret.

Elias had not merely stolen money.

He had arranged the car accident that killed Lorenzo’s mother.

Lorenzo went completely still.

Giovanni closed his eyes.

He had known.

For twenty years.

And had never been able to prove it.

Lorenzo walked out.

Nora followed him into the snow.

“Where are you going?”

“To Manhattan.”

“To kill him?”

Lorenzo stopped.

That was answer enough.

Nora stepped in front of him.

“If you kill Elias, you give him exactly what he wants.”

“Move.”

“No.”

“Nora.”

“You'll become the monster he has spent years telling everyone you are.”

His jaw clenched.

“He murdered my mother.”

“And he stole five years from your father. Don’t let him steal the rest of your life too.”

“You don’t understand.”

“No. I understand exactly.”

She stepped closer.

“Brody stole years from me. He lied to me. Used me. Left me pregnant. And right now, I want him to hurt.”

Her voice broke.

“But Lily deserves a mother who chooses what kind of person she becomes.”

She placed a hand against Lorenzo’s chest.

“And your father deserves a son who comes home.”

Lorenzo looked down at her hand.

Then at her face.

His rage slowly fractured.

He covered her hand with his.

Neither spoke.

He didn't go to Manhattan.

But Elias came to them.

That evening, a black sedan appeared beyond the estate gates.

May you like

Brody stepped out.

And in his arms was a bomb.
