Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN AT THE GATE

Three years after Nora married Lorenzo Moretti, someone arrived at the estate claiming Giovanni Moretti had another son.
She came during Lily’s seventh birthday party.
Children ran through the garden carrying balloons while Giovanni sat beneath a white canopy pretending not to steal frosting from Lily’s cake.
The estate no longer looked like the fortress Nora had first entered.
There were flowers where armed men had once stood.
Laughter echoed through rooms that had once carried whispers.
And Lorenzo, dressed in an expensive charcoal suit, was currently allowing Lily to paint glitter across the back of his hand.
“Hold still, Daddy.”
“I run three corporations.”
“And?”
“I’m just establishing context.”
“You’re moving.”
Lily narrowed her eyes.
Lorenzo immediately stopped.
Nora laughed from across the terrace.
Then the security gates opened.
Marcus approached quickly.
His expression told Lorenzo something was wrong before he spoke.
“There’s a woman outside.”
“Congratulations.”
“She asked for Giovanni.”
Lorenzo looked up.
“Who is she?”
“She says her name is Evelyn Cross.”
Giovanni’s glass slipped from his hand.
It shattered.
Everyone turned.
Nora had never seen him react to a name that way.
“John?”
Giovanni’s face had gone pale.
His recovered speech remained slow but clear.
“Let her in.”
Lorenzo stood.
“Dad?”
“Now.”
Ten minutes later, Evelyn Cross entered the library.
She was approximately sixty.
Elegant.
Silver-blonde hair.
A dark green coat.
But it was her eyes that made Nora’s breath catch.
Gray.
Exactly like Lorenzo’s.
Evelyn looked directly at Giovanni.
“You got old.”
Giovanni stared at her.
“So did you.”
Her mouth trembled.
“You still insult women badly.”
“Tradition.”
Nobody laughed.
Lorenzo stepped forward.
“Who are you?”
Evelyn looked at him.
For several seconds, something almost maternal passed across her face.
Then she opened her handbag and placed an old photograph on the desk.
Giovanni.
Younger.
Beside him stood Evelyn.
She appeared pregnant.
Nora slowly looked toward Giovanni.
Lorenzo did not.
His eyes remained on Evelyn.
“What do you want?”
“To stop a mistake your father made forty-one years ago from destroying your family.”
Giovanni’s face hardened.
“Leave.”
“No.”
“Evelyn.”
“You had forty years.”
Lorenzo slammed his palm against the desk.
“Enough.”
Silence.
“Someone tells me what this is.”
Evelyn removed another item.
A birth certificate.
She placed it in front of Lorenzo.
Father:
Giovanni Antonio Moretti.
Mother:
Evelyn Marie Cross.
Child:
Alexander Cross.
Lorenzo read it twice.
Then looked at his father.
“You have another son?”
Giovanni closed his eyes.
Nora felt the room shift.
Lorenzo’s voice became quieter.
“That means I have a brother.”
“Half-brother,” Evelyn said.
“Where is he?”
Her expression changed.
“Missing.”
“Since when?”
“Six weeks.”
Marcus straightened.
“Why come here now?”
“Because three days before Alexander disappeared, he called me.”
She removed her phone.
“He told me he had discovered something about the Moretti family trust.”
Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.
“What?”
“He wouldn’t say.”
Evelyn looked toward Nora.
“But he mentioned her.”
Nora froze.
“Me?”
“By name.”
Lorenzo stepped between them instinctively.
“What did he say?”
Evelyn swallowed.
“He said, ‘If anything happens to me, find Nora Hale Moretti. She’s the only one who doesn’t know why she was really brought into that house.’”
Nora felt cold.
“That was explained years ago.”
Elias had arranged her employment because of Margaret’s evidence.
Evelyn shook her head.
“Apparently not all of it.”
Giovanni looked away.
Nora saw it.
“John.”
He didn't answer.
She crossed the room.
“You know something.”
Lorenzo turned.
“Dad?”
Giovanni’s hands trembled.
For years, Nora had trusted this man completely.
He had become her family.
Her father in every way except blood.
Now she saw something she had not seen since room 4B.
Fear.
“Nora,” Giovanni said slowly, “there are things I wanted buried.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“For your safety.”
Her expression changed.
“Please don't say that to me.”
Giovanni looked confused.
“Don’t decide what truth I can survive because you love me.”
Lorenzo glanced at her.
The words echoed lessons they had all learned years earlier.
Giovanni lowered his head.
“You are right.”
Then the lights flickered.
Marcus touched his earpiece.
His face hardened.
“Security breach.”
Lorenzo immediately moved toward Nora and Lily.
“Where?”
“North perimeter.”
An alarm sounded.
Everyone froze.
A vehicle had crashed through the outer gate.
Security teams surrounded it.
The driver’s door opened.
A man stumbled out.
Blood covered his shirt.
He had Lorenzo’s gray eyes.
Evelyn screamed.
“Alexander!”
The man collapsed.
Nora ran forward with Lorenzo.
Alexander Cross looked to be in his early forties.
His face was bruised.
His hands tied with plastic restraints.
Lorenzo knelt.
“Who did this?”
Alexander’s eyes barely focused.
Then they found Nora.
“You.”
Nora stopped.
Alexander coughed blood.
“They were right.”
“Who?”
He gripped her wrist.
“The Morettis didn't choose you because of your mother.”
His fingers tightened.
“They chose you because of your father.”
Nora stopped breathing.
“My father died before I was born.”
Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
Then he whispered a name Giovanni clearly recognized.
“Thomas Vale.”
Giovanni staggered backward.
Nora looked at him.
“Who is Thomas Vale?”
Giovanni whispered:
May you like
“The man who once tried to kill me.”
And Alexander lost consciousness.
