Chapter 24 - THE MAN HE USED TO BE

Nora did not defend Lorenzo publicly.
That surprised everyone.
Especially Victor.
She also did not leave him.
She asked for truth.
All of it.
Lorenzo gave it.
At twenty-four, after taking over during Giovanni’s illness, Lorenzo had believed brutality was necessary.
The man in the video had stolen money and endangered a family operation.
Lorenzo ordered him beaten.
Not killed.
But the man died days later from his injuries.
Lorenzo carried that guilt for years.
“Were you charged?”
“No.”
“Because your family protected you?”
“Yes.”
Nora cried.
Lorenzo did not touch her.
He knew comfort was not his right in that moment.
“Did his family know?”
“No.”
“Did you ever help them?”
“Anonymously.”
“That's not accountability.”
“I know.”
The answer mattered.
Not enough.
But it mattered.
Nora spent the night alone.
In the morning, she visited Giovanni.
“Did you know?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you make him face consequences?”
Giovanni looked ashamed.
“Because he was my son.”
Nora nodded.
“And that was wrong.”
“Yes.”
The old Giovanni would have defended family above morality.
This Giovanni did not.
Nora returned to Lorenzo.
“What was his name?”
“Daniel Reeves.”
“Family?”
“A wife. Two daughters.”
“Find them.”
Lorenzo understood.
Daniel’s widow, Rebecca, lived in Connecticut.
Lorenzo asked to meet her.
He did not bring lawyers.
No money.
No excuses.
Nora accompanied him but stayed silent.
Lorenzo told Rebecca everything.
She slapped him.
He accepted it.
Then she screamed.
Cried.
Asked why.
Lorenzo answered:
“Because I was cruel, afraid, and powerful enough that nobody stopped me.”
Nora watched.
That was accountability.
Not redemption.
Redemption was not something Lorenzo could declare for himself.
Rebecca could hate him forever.
He had to live with that.
Lorenzo offered to cooperate with authorities if she wanted the case reopened.
She did.
He agreed.
Federal prosecutors reviewed the case.
Because of statute issues and prior corruption, the legal outcome remained uncertain.
But Lorenzo gave testimony.
Publicly.
The Moretti company stock crashed again.
Victor believed he had won.
Instead, something unexpected happened.
Former victims began coming forward.
Not only against Lorenzo.
Against the Council.
Because Lorenzo had admitted wrongdoing first.
The wall of fear cracked.
Men who had stayed silent for decades began speaking.
Victor’s empire began collapsing under testimony.
Nora’s foundation was cleared.
Lorenzo stepped away from corporate leadership during the investigation.
Alexander temporarily took over legitimate operations.
Brotherhood, once denied, became responsibility.
One evening, Nora found Lorenzo sitting on the porch.
“Do you regret telling Rebecca?”
“No.”
“Even if you go to prison?”
He looked at her.
“No.”
Nora sat beside him.
“I’m angry at you.”
“I know.”
“I don't know when that stops.”
“I know.”
She took his hand.
“But I love who you became.”
His eyes filled.
“That isn't forgiveness.”
“I know.”
“It isn't permission to forget.”
“I know.”
“It means we keep telling the truth.”
“Yes.”
Then Lily appeared.
She had heard enough news to know something was wrong.
“Daddy?”
Lorenzo immediately knelt.
“Hey.”
“Did you hurt someone?”
Nora’s heart broke.
Lorenzo could have softened it.
He didn't.
“Yes.”
Lily began crying.
“Why?”
“Because I made terrible choices before you were born.”
“Are you bad?”
Lorenzo looked at Nora.
Then back at Lily.
“I did bad things.”
Lily cried harder.
“Are you going away?”
“I don't know.”
She threw herself into his arms.
“I don't want you to.”
Lorenzo held her.
“I know.”
She whispered:
“Don't do bad things anymore.”
He cried.
“I won’t.”
It was the simplest moral judgment he had ever received.
And the hardest.
Three weeks later, Victor Salerno was arrested.
But before federal agents entered his home, he disappeared.
At the estate, security footage showed a black SUV approaching Lily’s school.
Nora’s phone rang.
Victor’s voice said:
“You wanted truth, Nora?”
Her blood froze.
“Where is Lily?”
Victor laughed softly.

“Come hear the final truth about your husband.”
Then a child screamed in the background.
