Chapter 17 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THOMAS VALE

Nora stared at the photograph.

Her hands shook.

Lorenzo ordered a complete internal security review.

No forced entry.

No unknown vehicle.

The intruder had access.

Again.

Nora hated the pattern.

Someone was always inside.

Always closer than expected.

Marcus reviewed footage for hours.

Finally, they found one impossible frame.

Evelyn Cross entered Lily’s hallway at 2:14 a.m.

Lorenzo looked toward Alexander.

“No.”

Alexander went pale.

“She wouldn't.”

Security brought Evelyn in.

She didn't resist.

Nora placed the photograph in front of her.

“You left this.”

“Yes.”

Alexander stared.

“Mom?”

“I had to make you listen.”

“Listen to what?”

Evelyn sat down.

“I knew Thomas.”

Giovanni closed his eyes.

Another secret.

Lorenzo almost laughed from exhaustion.

“Of course you did.”

Evelyn had known Thomas before Alexander was born.

She had worked as a young attorney for companies connected to Giovanni.

She discovered Thomas survived.

Instead of telling Giovanni immediately, she secretly communicated with Thomas.

Alexander looked devastated.

“Why?”

“Because he threatened you.”

Thomas knew Alexander was Giovanni’s child.

He promised to kill him if Evelyn exposed anything.

“So you stayed silent for forty years?” Alexander asked.

“No.”

Evelyn’s voice broke.

“I became useful.”

She fed Thomas false information.

Redirected investigations.

Quietly protected Giovanni’s companies where possible.

But somewhere along the way, another person joined the network.

A woman.

Thomas answered to her.

“Who?”

Evelyn looked at Nora.

“Your grandmother.”

Silence.

Nora blinked.

“My grandmother died before I was born.”

“No.”

Thomas’s mother, Eleanor Vale, was alive.

Ninety-two years old.

Still sharp.

Still powerful.

She had built the financial structure Thomas inherited.

She had also taught him the philosophy that defined him:

Blood above morality.

Legacy above love.

Power above everything.

“She hated Margaret,” Evelyn said.

“Why?”

“Because Margaret convinced Thomas he could leave the family.”

Nora laughed bitterly.

“Thomas doesn't seem like someone who wanted a quiet suburban life.”

“For six months, he did.”

That surprised everyone.

Margaret had nearly changed him.

Then Eleanor intervened.

She convinced Thomas that love made him weak.

After Margaret betrayed him to Giovanni, Thomas returned completely to his mother’s worldview.

Nora suddenly understood.

The final enemy was not money.

It was inheritance.

Not financial inheritance.

Emotional inheritance.

The poison parents hand to children and call tradition.

“Where is Eleanor?” Lorenzo asked.

Evelyn looked toward the north.

“Canada.”

Nora shook her head.

“I’m not chasing a ninety-two-year-old woman across borders.”

“You won't have to.”

Evelyn’s phone buzzed.

A message.

One sentence.

Bring Nora to me, or I will come for Lily myself.

Lorenzo said:

“No.”

Nora said:

“Yes.”

They turned toward each other.

“No,” Lorenzo repeated.

“I’m going.”

“Absolutely not.”

Nora folded her arms.

“Do we need to repeat our entire marriage?”

“This isn't about control.”

“It never feels like control to the person controlling.”

“She threatened our daughter.”

“Exactly.”

Lorenzo’s jaw clenched.

Nora stepped closer.

“I need to end this.”

“We end it.”

“Then come with me.”

That stopped him.

“You're not leaving me behind?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“I'm just not staying behind either.”

He exhaled.

“Fine.”

“Fine.”

Alexander watched.

“Do you two always negotiate life-threatening situations like married people arguing over groceries?”

“Yes,” Marcus said.

“Constantly.”

Three days later, they traveled to Quebec.

Eleanor Vale lived in a stone mansion overlooking a frozen lake.

No guards were visible.

That meant there were many.

Inside, Eleanor sat beside a fireplace.

Small.

White-haired.

Beautiful in the way old portraits are beautiful.

She looked at Nora.

“Margaret’s eyes.”

Nora remained standing.

“You threatened my daughter.”

“I threatened your fear.”

“Same mistake Thomas made.”

Eleanor smiled.

“No. Thomas underestimated you.”

“And you don't?”

“No.”

Eleanor gestured to a chair.

Nora remained standing.

“Suit yourself.”

Then Eleanor looked at Lorenzo.

“Moretti men always choose difficult women.”

Lorenzo answered:

“We get lucky.”

Nora glanced at him.

Eleanor noticed.

“Love.”

She almost spat the word.

“The most expensive weakness human beings invented.”

Nora looked at the old woman.

“No.”

Eleanor raised a brow.

“Fear is.”

For the first time, Eleanor’s smile disappeared.

Nora continued.

“You built an entire dynasty because you were afraid your children might choose lives you couldn't control.”

Eleanor’s fingers tightened.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“You think Thomas is your father.”

Nora froze.

“He is.”

Eleanor smiled.

“No, child.”

She opened a drawer.

May you like

Removed a DNA report.

“And that is the last lie Margaret told you.”
