Chapter 23 - NORA MORETTI GOES TO WAR

Nora’s weapon was not violence.

It was people.

Her foundation had spent years supporting elder care programs, women’s shelters, rehabilitation centers, and workers displaced by organized crime.

Many Moretti legitimate companies employed thousands.

The Council expected fear to isolate Lorenzo.

Instead, Nora went public.

Not with criminal accusations.

With transparency.

She released audited financial statements.

Employee protection plans.

Emergency payroll guarantees funded partly from her personal trust.

She stood before cameras and said:

“No family tradition is worth leaving ordinary people unable to feed their children.”

The statement exploded online.

Moretti employees publicly supported the company.

Customers rallied.

Investors who valued the legitimate restructuring stepped in.

Victor had tried to make Lorenzo look weak.

Instead, he made Nora visible.

She became more dangerous than any Don.

Lorenzo watched an interview from the study.

Nora answered a reporter:

“Were you afraid marrying into the Moretti family?”

“Yes.”

“Are you afraid now?”

“Yes.”

“Then why challenge people with this much power?”

Nora smiled.

“Because courage isn't the absence of fear. Sometimes it's deciding someone else shouldn't have to inherit yours.”

Lorenzo turned off the television.

Giovanni sat beside him.

“You married above yourself.”

Lorenzo nodded.

“Apparently.”

Victor responded differently.

He targeted Nora’s foundation.

Anonymous allegations accused it of laundering Moretti money.

Federal audits began.

Donations paused.

Nora’s reputation took damage.

For the first time, the attack hurt her personally.

She returned home after reporters surrounded her office.

“I spent years building that.”

Lorenzo hugged her.

“They won't destroy it.”

“You can't promise that.”

“No.”

He corrected himself.

“We will fight for it.”

Better.

Then a former foundation employee appeared on television.

She claimed Nora ordered financial records altered.

Nora recognized her.

Emily Price.

A woman Nora had personally helped after domestic abuse.

The betrayal hurt.

Then Emily called secretly.

Crying.

“They have my son.”

Nora closed her eyes.

Of course.

Victor weaponized love.

Again.

Nora arranged a meeting without telling Lorenzo.

Old Nora might have gone alone.

New Nora told him five minutes later.

“I need to meet Emily.”

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

His face hardened.

She continued:

“Marcus comes. You stay with Lily.”

He stopped.

That was different.

She wasn't excluding him.

She was dividing responsibility.

“Okay.”

The meeting happened in a crowded train station.

Emily handed Nora a drive.

Proof the Council forced her testimony.

Then gunmen appeared.

Marcus moved Nora behind cover.

Shots rang out.

Passengers screamed.

Emily was hit.

Nora crawled toward her.

Emily gasped:

“My son…”

“We’ll find him.”

“You promise?”

Nora took her hand.

“Yes.”

Emily survived.

Marcus traced her son to a warehouse.

Lorenzo personally led the rescue.

The boy came home alive.

The next morning, Emily publicly recanted.

The Council’s strategy began collapsing.

But Victor still had one card.

He leaked evidence of Lorenzo’s past crimes.

Not rumors.

Real crimes.

Acts committed before his transformation.

Assault.

Extortion.

Conspiracy.

Nora read the files in silence.

Some she knew.

Some she did not.

Lorenzo entered.

He saw her face.

“I was going to tell you.”

She looked up.

“When?”

He stopped.

Wrong sentence.

Again.

Nora’s eyes filled.

“After everything?”

“I was ashamed.”

“So you hid it.”

“Yes.”

“How many people?”

Lorenzo said nothing.

“How many people did you hurt?”

His voice was low.

“Enough.”

Nora stepped backward.

For years, she had loved the man Lorenzo became.

Now she had to decide whether she could live beside the man he had been.

Victor released the final recording.

A younger Lorenzo stood in a warehouse.

A terrified man knelt before him.

The video ended before showing what happened next.

But the implication was clear.
