Chapter 9 - The Broken Pawn

Julian looked unrecognizable. His designer tuxedo had been replaced by a wrinkled button-down, his hair disheveled, the arrogance completely extinguished from his posture. When he saw Lawrence Hayes sitting at the head of the table, his knees nearly buckled.
"Julian," Hayes sneered, his voice dripping with disgust. "The disgraced husband. Come to beg for leniency?"
"He isn't here to beg, Lawrence," I intervened. "He’s here as a cooperating state witness."
Hayes scoffed. "A witness to what? Julian knows nothing. He signed whatever Victoria put in front of him."
"Julian was incompetent, yes," I agreed smoothly. "He was so desperate to prove he was a visionary that he never read the fine print. But Julian had one habit you didn't account for: he recorded every single private meeting in his penthouse office for the last five years, terrified that his partners would cheat him."
Julian looked down at the floor, refusing to meet Hayes' eyes. "I kept the backup drives in my mother's safe," Julian muttered, his voice trembling. "Every conversation with Hayes. Every instruction on how to forge Clara's signatures. Every wire transfer route to Blackwood."
Hayes’ face paled, the color draining until he looked like parchment. "You little fool... you signed non-disclosure agreements!"
"NDAs do not protect criminal conspiracies to commit corporate fraud, Lawrence," Arthur chimed in, sliding a sealed federal subpoena across the table. "Julian entered a formal plea bargain ninety minutes ago. In exchange for protective custody and reduced sentencing, he turned over the complete unedited audio archive between you, Victoria, and the shell brokers."
The federal marshals stepped forward, surrounding Hayes and his legal team.
"Lawrence Hayes," the lead marshal announced, "you are under arrest for grand larceny, interstate wire fraud, and conspiracy."
Hayes gripped his cane, his knuckles turning white. As the marshals pulled his hands behind his back, he glared at me with absolute hatred. "You think you've won, Clara? You think this ends here? You don't know the first thing about what your father was really hiding."
"I know enough to keep what's mine," I replied coldly. "Take them away."
As they escorted Hayes and the lawyers out, Julian remained standing near the door, looking at me with pathetic, desperate hope.
"Clara..." Julian choked out, taking a trembling step forward. "I was trapped... they threatened my family... I never wanted to hurt you—"
May you like
"Julian," I interrupted, my voice devoid of anger, left only with complete indifference. "Don't flatter yourself. You weren't a victim. You were just a coward who enjoyed kicking someone you thought couldn't fight back."
I nodded to the guards. "Get him out of my sight."
