Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Execution

The Grand Ballroom remained suspended in stunned silence. Julian stood paralyzed, his eyes darting between the sapphire at my throat and the private security detail flanked behind me. Eleanor’s hands trembled against her silk shawl, while Chloe looked desperately around the room, waiting for someone to reveal the spectacle as a grotesque joke.
I did not wait for Julian to find his voice. Turning smoothly toward the stage, I mounted the steps with deliberate composure. The spotlight tracked every movement, illuminating the sharp, uncompromising lines of my gown.
Taking the podium, I adjusted the microphone. My reflection gleamed on the prompter screen, which had originally been programmed with Julian’s self-congratulatory remarks.
"Good evening, esteemed partners and industry colleagues," I addressed the silent room. "For months, speculation has grown regarding the identity of the controlling entity behind the Sterling Investment Group. Many in this room assumed a faceless consortium or an overseas conglomerate held the final say over the revitalization packages for several major New York developments, including Vance Enterprises."
A ripple of nervous murmurs stirred the tables. In the front row, Victoria was furiously typing into her phone, her knuckles bleached pale beneath the table’s linen cloth.
"Tonight was billed as a celebration of partnership," I continued, meeting Julian’s horrified gaze directly. "A narrative crafted to project confidence, visionary leadership, and stability. But sound governance cannot be built upon hollow projections, altered balance sheets, or manufactured competence. Earlier this evening, Vance Enterprises was slated to finalize a hundred-and-fifty-million-dollar recapitalization line."
I signaled to Arthur Vance, who stood at the edge of the stage with a secure tablet. With a single tap, the massive visual displays flanking the dais switched from corporate promotional reels to real-time financial tracking logs.
"As majority debt holder, Sterling Investment Group has exercised its contractual right under Section 14 to initiate an immediate audit of all operating facilities. Effective as of twelve-o-one AM, the credit facility has been frozen."
Gasps erupted across the hall. Board members and institutional lenders sprang from their seats, frantic calls already lighting up phones across the room.
Julian broke. He lunged toward the steps, his face flushed scarlet, his earlier arrogance dissolving into sheer, unvarnished panic. "Clara, stop this! What the hell do you think you’re doing? You don't know anything about finance! Security, remove her—she’s having an episode!"

Two private guards blocked him instantly, their stance unyielding.
I looked down at him from the podium, my voice carrying over the sound system with chilling clarity. "The time for playing the helpless patron is over, Julian. You wanted a public display of success tonight. Welcome to the reckoning."
