Chapter 10 - The Unopened Vault

By evening, the storm had quieted. Vance Enterprises had been absorbed into Sterling’s primary restructuring portfolio, its assets liquidated to protect the legitimate employees and contractors whose livelihoods Julian had endangered. Eleanor and Chloe had fled the state to escape public scrutiny, their social standing permanently eradicated.

I stood on the balcony of my penthouse, the cool autumn wind sweeping over the Manhattan skyline. The city stretched out below in a vast tapestry of golden lights.

Arthur stepped onto the terrace, holding a sealed, weathered leather binder that had been recovered from Lawrence Hayes’ personal safe during the federal raid.

"It's over, Clara," Arthur said gently. "The board has confirmed your absolute controlling stake. There are no remaining legal challenges. Vance Enterprises is gone, and Hayes will spend the rest of his life in federal prison."

"Is that the file Hayes mentioned?" I asked, looking down at the worn leather.

"Yes," Arthur said, hesitating. "The forensic teams decrypted the initial manifest before turning it over to us. You need to see this."

I opened the binder. Inside was a flight manifest dated the exact afternoon of my father’s fatal crash twelve years ago.

Attached to the manifest was an encrypted corporate passenger log that had never been submitted to the National Transportation Safety Board. On the list was my father’s name, followed by four corporate officers—all of whom had perished.

Except for one.

At the very bottom of the document was an amendment filed forty-eight hours after the crash, signed by an anonymous medical examiner, confirming that only three bodies had been positively identified at the site.

Beneath the note was a single recent bank transfer authorization dated three days ago, originating from an IP address in Zurich, bearing the unmistakable private signature seal of my father.

A chill ran down my spine that the autumn wind couldn't match.

I looked up at Arthur, whose eyes held the same silent, staggering question.

The war for Vance Enterprises was over. Julian had been dismantled, Hayes had been crushed, and my empire was secure. But the mystery of my own life was only just beginning.

I closed the binder, looked out toward the darkened horizon, and picked up the phone.

"Marcus," I said quietly. "Prepare the jet for Switzerland."
