Chapter 8 - The Counter-Strike

Hayes believed he had backed me into a corner. His team began laying physical stock certificates and grandfathered covenant documents across the glass conference table.
"Under the terms of the 1994 Maritime Accord," Hayes’ lead counsel announced, "any default initiated against a Vance subsidiary automatically triggers liquidation rights in favor of Blackwood Capital. Miss Sterling, you effectively signed away your controlling interest when you pulled Julian's credit facility on live television."
A heavy silence descended upon the boardroom. Arthur looked at the documents, his jaw tightening as he scanned the irrevocable clauses.

Arthur looked up, hesitation flickering across his features. "Technically... on paper, the covenants are binding under New York State maritime commercial law."
Hayes smiled, a cold, predatory smirk. "You see, my dear? You spent eight years learning to play the submissive housewife, and you played it so well that you forgot how wolves actually hunt. I looked at Hayes, then down at the documents, and slowly began to laugh.
The sound caught Hayes off guard. His smile faltered slightly. "What do you find amusing?"
"You spent forty years planning this, Lawrence," I said, stepping away from the head of the table and walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park. "You manipulated Julian, you blackmailed his father, and you orchestrated an elaborate web to strip me of everything my family built."
I turned back to face him. "Did you really think my grandfather didn't know what you were?"
I picked up the remote control on the credenza and activated the secure terminal.

"Marcus," I said. "Bring in our second guest."
The side conference door opened. Walking in, flanked by two armed federal marshals, was someone Hayes clearly never expected to see again: Julian Vance.
