Chapter 23 - NO RESCUE MISSIONOld Alessandro would have found Jonah.

Probably violently.
Lily forbade it.
“Then what do you suggest?”
“We make Graham think the testimony worked.”
I stared at my daughter.
She smiled.
I became concerned.
Poppy House announced Lily was temporarily stepping aside pending investigation.
News channels exploded.
Graham’s attorneys celebrated privately.
And investigators watched.
Within eighteen hours, a Northstar employee attempted to access a hidden corporate storage unit.
Police followed him.
Inside were the missing servers.
And Jonah.
Alive.
Uninjured.
Terrified.
Graham had not physically imprisoned him.
That would have been too crude.
He threatened Jonah’s younger sister, who had an undocumented immigration issue stemming from an expired childhood visa.
He promised to report her and destroy her nursing career.
Coercion without chains.
Jonah agreed to make the statement.
“But I put January in there,” he told Lily.
“I know.”
“You caught it?”
“My father did.”
Jonah looked at me.
I smiled.
“Old men occasionally remain useful.”
The servers changed everything.
Deleted emails.
Payment schedules.
Internal warnings.
Graham’s instructions.
And a folder labeled:
WARD PROBLEM.
Inside was an audio recording.
Helen had confronted Graham five years earlier.
His answer ended the case.
“These kids aren’t children to the state. They’re units of service. Stop pretending otherwise.”
A federal prosecutor listened twice.
Then said:
May you like
“We have him.”
They almost did.
