Chapter 22 - GRAHAM SHAW RETURNSGraham did not flee the country.

He appeared on television.

Standing beside his attorney.

“I have done nothing illegal.”

Technically clever.

Some decisions had been unethical but carefully structured.

Contractors.

Consultants.

Relatives receiving “care support.”

Algorithms prioritizing placements.

Graham had built distance between himself and every ugly outcome.

Then he attacked Lily.

He claimed Poppy House had forged records to steal Harbor Light contracts.

He produced emails.

Bank records.

And testimony from Jonah Vale.

Lily stared at the screen.

“Jonah?”

Jonah had disappeared that morning.

His recorded statement claimed Lily ordered him to create the fake Poppy entity.

It was devastating.

Except for one problem.

I noticed it.

“When did Jonah first meet you?”

“Six months ago.”

“In the parking lot.”

“Yes.”

The video showed Jonah saying:

“When Lily asked me to build the database last January…”

Poppy House had not opened.

But more importantly, Lily had been in London last January for a child-trauma conference.

Public schedule.

Passport records.

Hotel cameras.

The lie was provable.

Why would Jonah tell such an obvious lie?

Lily understood before I did.

“He wants us to know he’s being forced.”

Exactly.

Jonah had inserted a contradiction intentionally.

A breadcrumb.

Not enough to reveal where he was.

Enough to tell us not to believe him.
