Chapter 15 - THE CHILD WHO WASN’T MISSINGWe found the first of the four missing children accidentally.

His name was Caleb Dunn.
Officially, his case ended at age eleven.
No school records afterward.
No medical claims.
No updated address.
Nothing.
Jonah believed Caleb was dead.
He was wrong.
Caleb was sixteen.
And living under another name with his grandmother in Vermont.
Lily traveled there with investigators.
The grandmother opened the door holding a shotgun.
That conversation took time.
Eventually she lowered it.
Caleb explained.
Harbor Light had placed him with his father despite documented violence.
His grandmother begged the agency to reconsider.
Nobody listened.
So she took him.
Technically, she kidnapped him.
A sympathetic caseworker helped them disappear.
Lily leaned forward.
“Who?”
Caleb’s grandmother shook her head.
“I promised.”
“That person may have helped other children.”
“That person saved my grandson.”
“I’m not trying to prosecute them.”
The old woman studied Lily.
Then disappeared upstairs.
She returned with a Christmas card.
No signature.
Only a photograph.
A woman standing beside an ocean.
Behind her was a small restaurant.
I recognized it immediately when Lily sent me the picture.
The same restaurant from Luca’s photograph.
The one Marco had mailed me from prison decades earlier.
On the back of Caleb’s card were five words.
SOME CHILDREN MUST DISAPPEAR SAFELY.
I stared at the handwriting.
I had seen it before.
Not Marco’s.
Luca’s.
Impossible.
May you like
Luca had been dead thirty-eight years.
But somebody was still using his words.
