Chapter 20 - HELEN WARDHelen walked into a police station forty-eight hours later.

Nobody kidnapped her.

Nobody held her hostage.

She had been hiding because she did not trust anyone.

Including us.

She carried three notebooks.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Complaints.

Photographs.

For eleven years she had documented everything.

Lily asked the obvious question.

“Why didn’t you go to police?”

“I did.”

“When?”

“Eight years ago.”

Helen named the detective.

Retired.

Investigators found him.

He had received consulting payments from Northstar.

“Then why not federal authorities?”

“I tried.”

“Through whom?”

“Harbor Light’s attorney.”

The complaint never left the building.

Helen looked at Lily.

“I stopped believing systems saved children.”

“And started making them disappear.”

“Yes.”

“Caleb?”

“Safe.”

“The other three?”

“Safe.”

“Where?”

Helen shook her head.

Lily became angry.

“You don’t get to decide alone.”

“I kept them alive.”

“And if you die? If they need medical records? College documents? Citizenship papers? You saved them from one danger by making their lives legally impossible.”

Helen flinched.

It was the first time someone had challenged the morality of her rescue.

Lily softened.

“You did what you thought you had to.”

Helen cried.

“But now we do it correctly.”

That became the turning point.

Not guns.

Not revenge.

Documentation.

Lawyers.

Victim advocates.

Protected testimony.

The three children entered formal witness protection arrangements with their safe guardians.

For the first time, they could exist again.

But Graham Shaw disappeared before his arrest warrant was issued.
